Security, Speed, and service-Six...Best D/A revolvers

My opinion - Ruger hit the apex of Double Action revolvers with the Security, Speed, and Service Six's.  Best of all time. Extremely strong, accurate.   The take-down feature is brilliant - blue or stainless -  drop 'em in the water, carry 'em in the rain - no problem!  No side-plate screws to worry about. 
I like them better than the GP-100's because they are lighter - more practical.
Only wish they had come in a 5-shot .44 and/or .45 version.

Can't disagree with that. I have had several over the years and they are practically indestructible. I still have a speed six. Can't think of any reason to ever part with it. I would like to come across a nice 4" security six again. Sold one years ago and regretted it ever since.   KN

I too have had several over the years , the only one that i have left is a 6" Security Six in blue . JMHO but $$ for $$ the best wheel gun ever made . Wish they still made them , just don't care for the look and feel of the GPs .

I have three, all blue.  A 6" 357 Security Six, 4" Security Six, and a 3" Speed Six, 38.

I had a 4" Stainless Security Six that I sold to a fellow and bought a .44  SBH with the money. Several years later the man asked if I wanted to buy the same revolver back. 


It now resides in my nightstand.

yep...me too....down to a 4" security six stainless...gone are speed sixs, a 4" python, etc. etc.

How is the DA trigger pull on a speed-six?
Can the speed-six compete with the S&W´s  in PPC off-duty matches?

Well, soon I will have the answers to my questions.
Tomorrow I´ll have a look at a speed-six that's for sale at a nice prize, it has had an action job done and the cylinder has been throated up from 38sp to 357mag.
Maybe I´ll trade in my mod.17-3 for it...

Now I can answer my own question, I tried it and I liked it.
The trigger pull is really good in both SA and DA, not quite as good as my S&W 686 though.
It had really good sights too and its very pleasant too shoot, but not easy.
This speed-six is blued, in very good condition, with original wooden grips, and it comes with an old Lawrence holster.
It seems to prefer jacketed bullets!? Any comments on that?

I have not made up my mind yet, but I´ll probably buy it.

Edit: I´m buying it, here is a picture from my test-shooting offhand at 25m.

My older Security/Service 6 has a great trigger.  Shoots lead bullets just fine also. 158 gr. LSWC, 5 grs. Unique.
Sitting down w/ forearms on knees i can hit an 8.5 x 11 paper 5 of 6 at 50 yds.  Point of aim.  Is that fairly ok for iron sights?

I've had the 6 inch security 6 for years, gave it an action job, loved it. a year ago I picked up a S&W 686, gave it an action job, and now when I compare the 2 the smith just has it beat hands down. of course I paid 2x as much for the smith. I still love my security 6 though. it's the one I loan out and test new loads on because I know I cannot hurt it.

I found myself in the market for another 357 a few months ago, and happened onto a Security Six 4" stainless, the cop wanted a hundred bucks for it.  He'd carried it for seven years as a patrolman, then retired it when they switched to autos.  It shoots better than I do, handles anything from wadcutters to full-house magnums, and is pretty much indestructable.  I'd gladly have paid $250 for it.  Deals like that are hard to find, and no, it's not for sale, EVER.

6" security six here and it as good a shooter as my other 357s. i'm suppose to be selling a few off and my problem is i take it out and shoot it ,and i can't bring myself to sell it.

If you haven't done so already, get yourself a set of Pachmayr compac grips for your Speed 6! I've got a 4" 9MM Speed 6 and a 2 3/4" 357 Speed 6  that I wouldn't shoot without them. HTH

This weekend I was at a competition were I had the opportunity to feel up a security six with pachmayr gripper grips and I´ll be ordering a pair of those soon.
Here in Sweden Ruger security/speed six are not very common, S&W mod. 586/686 are popular (yes I have a 686 too) and mod.14 and 17 you can buy very cheap here (I´ve had those too) mod. 16 is very expensive if you can find one here.
I´m gonna take my speedsix to the local smith soon and have him fix the forcing cone so I can shoot all kinds of bullets thru it and not only plated and jacketed ones.
It´s a very nice gun, fun to shoot.

Hi ~ Newbie here. However, back in the early 70's, had a hankering for a 6" 357 sec six. Couldn't find one but did find one in 38Spl at a local dealer ~ IIRC, for $99 which was a lot of money then ~ reluctantly, I purchased it. Since then, I've owned many sec sixes almost all SS but tho they're gone, I held onto the ole blued 38Spl. It was as perfect as one could hope for. No over buffing/irregularities. Tight feels good ~ the frame has changed to a burgundy color over the years but I consider it a prime example of what can come out of a std mass production.
