Strange catfish behavior
« on: April 03, 2007, 02:52:54 PM »
I'm not much of a fisherman, but I was out walking/scouting for hunting tonight and saw the oddest behavior from a fish that I've ever seen.

A good sized catfish, say about 20" long with a heavy girth.  I'd guess it at 14-15 lbs, but I might be wrong.  I probably couldn't have wrapped both hands around it.

Anyway, it was hanging in the shallows 2-3 ft deep, lying on it's side and flopping around.  It would dive for a few seconds flip back and forth slowly then surface and lay there for a while.  I thought that it might be dying, but my wife pointed out that it might have been spawning.

I can tell you this, it was strange.  Any input?  I should mention that I'm in Western PA and that it's a stocked pond that the fish are fed in.  I don't maintain or manage the pond so I can't answer too many questions about that.
