Folks,
put a down payment on a used ,98% M29 mountain gun ,dealer was asking $500 ,wouldn't budge...so i swallowed the hook.I've been looking for sometime for one and almost went for the new Ruger 4" Redhawk (hard to get still) until i saw this beauty in the display case.Dealer had only got it in this week.Ofcourse it comes with the nice wooden grips with finger grooves as well as a rubber set.Question is , did i do ok ? I have a used gun price book at home for the year 2001 but this model isnt in it.So, it's newer than 2001 ?

you didnt steel it but you didnt get ripped off either. thats about the going price for a good used one around here

Thats a little dear in these parts, but then there are not a lot of those around. I paid $575 for mine back in 2002.

First let me say that I love mine. As I've said before, My only bitch with S&W mountain guns is the round butt! I understand that they are for people with small hands but, everyone who I know, that owns one of these either has or wants square butt conversion grips for it. On my 629-4 M/G I put the 500 grips. This is said without knowing what style of grip frame S&W has put on the newer ones of these? Just my $.02. My M/G with Herretts Jordon Troopers before going to the Hougues 500s:

Finally got to pick up my used M29 Mountain Gun today.The judge here in my county has been backlogged with pistol permit updates and they also misplaced my paperwork atleast once but today ,12 weeks later i got the go ahead to pick up my revolver.Well ,now i just have to find time to shoot it this weekend.I plan on shooting a few 44 specials thru it 1st and then moving up to some middle of the road remington 180 gr JSP's .If i figure out how to post here i'll throw up a picture in the near future.

I am with member S.B. on this, But I instead bought the model 25-13 Mountain Gun. Mine is in .45 Colt and quickly became my Favorite gun. I use it often and it sits upon my Nightstand every evening. I added the finger groove conversion grips to mine as well, and it really adds to better control when shooting targets. Regards, Hammerdown

If you factored in the joy my 4 inch n frames have broughten me 2000 bucks wouldnt be out of line. A 4 inch 44 smith is in my opinion the finest gun a guy could strap on there leg and go and chase game with.

Finally got to shoot the pistol this weekend.I dont reload so i put some winchester 44 special 200 gr silvertips thru her and followed up with 50 44 mag rem 180gr JSP's.The 44 specials were a pleasure to shoot and would make a nice 2 legged /home protection round.The 180 gr 44 mags didnt bark as bad as i had imagined they would.Everything functioned flawlessly.I got back as far as 35 yrds and was keeping them on a pieplate from a kneeling position.I'm not crazy about the black on black sights-getting too old.I may see a gunsmith about the front sight before deer season then again some fishing lure paint might be the ticket.

The discussion about a pistol permit is an eye opener for me. Here in Alaska, where I have been hiding out for almost 35 years, anyone who can legally carry a gun can carry a concealed gun; no permits or anything else. State law prevents muncipalities from having stricter gun laws than the state has. Our governor has as a personalized license plate on her truck "HUNT." And here in the state capitol, a city of 30,000, it's fairly common to see a kid carrying his .22 rifle or his shotgun on his bicycle as he goes or returns from hunting or shooting. I suppose that if things get any worse in the anti-gun cities and states, people can always move to Alaska.

With the exception of concealed carry that could be rural Wisconsin now. Until the school shootings that were the rage a few years ago my boys kept their guns in the car at school so they could hunt before and after school.

Hey Shooter, I don't know if this would work on a MG (don't know why not), but I put night sights on both a K-frame 66, and a N-frame 57. It gives you a standard 3-dot system in the day time, and glowing I-can-see-em-in-the-dark-woods-at-night capabilities, too.

Glad you're liking your new M-G! I like mine so much I'm finding no use for an L-frame 357 sized revolver anymore. Still like the 357 round, got a 3" model 60, etc but the N-frame mountain gun is such an ideal size/power level it has easily become my favorite double action revolver. Speaking of power: I'm also finding the power level in Keith hot 44 special handloads is all I really need. I do load this power level into 44 mag cases and am really happy with the combo.

Hello Shooter & Others
I will give up a Little secret that has helped me a bunch with sight issues. I Like most have failing eye sight and can use all the help I can get. I found the source for taking care of this problem and his company name is SDM. he makes all the custom Gold sight offerings for the factory S&W revolver's but buying direct will save you money. His name is Scott, and here is a Link to his web site. Call him and tell him what Barrel length and model your revolver is and he can send the correct height sight to you. All you need to swap out the original one is a good center Punch, while holding your revolver in a Bench vise with the Jaws covered with an Old Leather belt to protect the finish. Here is that Link to take care of your problem, just Look under S&W revolver gold Bead sights and they Light up like a ball of fire and look original once Installed. His sights are on the model 625 JM Performace revolver from S&W as well. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

I paid about $500.+ for my 629-2 MG and it is the gun I carry most in predator country. Also have the 45 LC version and a Lew Horton 624 44 Spec converted to 4 inch by the factory. I like shooting big comfortable bullets.

Glad I could help. This is not one of SDM's sights but an original McGivern gold bead. I took this Picture on a gray Overcast sky day to show how well the Gold bead shows yup. With the background being asphalt it shows how it would Look on a Black ten ring situation. Of course the One out of focus Picture I tried to show how it would Look on a normal sight plane but the Camera would not do both different lengths clear but you get the Picture No Pun Inteneded I hope this helps, Hammerdown.

Gee, I remember in the 60s walking into a 7/11 store with my .22 rifle and buying a box or two of .22 ammo. The long rifles were only .48 cents. Clerks didn't get excited at all. We could also take them to school and zero them in at the ROTC range. No teachers got upset over the fact that we had a rifle in our locker. Oh well.
