357 availability...
« on: March 26, 2007, 09:36:57 AM »
Just a heads up for anyone that has a receiver back at H&R for a .357 mag barrel.  I called today as my 8 weeks was up, and customer service told me that they are out of stock.  There will be another run, but I could expect to wait at least another 4 - 6 weeks.

I have a hard time figuring out why when the work and demand is there, why don't they gear up and take advantage of the oppertunity ?
shot placement is everything.

I sent my reciever in for a 357 and a 22/250 barrel on the 31st of Jan, The UPS truck just droped them off today. I must have got in just under the wire. Got the 357 cleaned and out to the range. It is a keeper. Shoots good but I dont like the sights much. P{refer some type of peep sight. Any suggestion?.

You can get the Williams WGRS from H&R for $18, part number is in the FAQs in the 2005 Retail parts price list link. There's also a link on Peep and Firesights so you can see what it looks like.

Hi Guy's
I don't understand why they don't bring out a batch of 357 rifles. There seems to still be a demand for them. I'd buy one. Here in Australia we don't have access to the accessory barrel program.
               Just my 2 cents worth.

Hello Jon f.

You may want to forward an e-mail to NEF regarding your desire.  I would bet that they have had such requests in the past, but you never know.  At the least, it keeps them informed that there is interest.  Here in the states, we may have the luxury of be able to buy the barrel, but I too would prefer the entire rifle as well.  I'll forward a request also.

g'day   ;)

man you just beat me.  They received mine Feb 4th and Im out of luck.  Oh well, I've been waiting this long, whats a few more months.  I hope this new run of barrels happens quickly and there arent any issues like with the 44 barrels.

I put a note in mine (they got it Friday) to ship a 30/30 barrel if they were out of stock on the 357.  I wonder how long their turnaround is for an instock barrel?  Surely not 8-10 weeks.  The last one that I sent 2 years ago was at my door in 27 days including shipping there and back.  Maybe those days are just gone.

Another Update
« Reply #13 on: March 29, 2007, 05:19:28 AM »
Well, I called CS this morning because I didnt want to have to wait months for multiple barrels.  So I was just going to cancel the other barrels and have my action wait for the 357 and deal with other calibers later on down the road.  Karen in CS told me that a new batch of 357 barrels had arrived and if they checked out properly, then my rifle would be done next week.

There is hope.

Has anyone else spoken to CS about the 357 availability?

Not about the barrel only.  I called a couple days ago and inquired about making the .357 available in a complete rifle package.  The reply was that it was not a good seller in the past and is unlikely to be produced, other than barrel only, in the future.  :(

I don't understand it either. I'd buy one in a heartbeat. The accessory barrel program would be great if all we had to do was order different barrels the way you can with TC single shot pistols and rifles.  And that's my two cents worth, which makes four cents between us.  ;D
If at first you don't succeed, by all means try again. But if this doesn't work, give up, because there is no sense in making a darn fool of yourself.

I know when I bought my 357 rifle, could not find one close so drove
to Oklahoma city to get one about 200 miles. might be more sales if they could them out to dealers.
  Just my 2 cents. Marv.

I have an idea , ( scary thought i know ) but how about a semi-custom shop were you could order a frame , stocks and barrel all in one shot . it would be the same as sending in a frame but with out the hassle of having to wait to shoot while your frame was away .

They could stick with stock barrels and ship it to your FFL same as a new rifle . I don't see were it would cause anymore headaches than trying to keep track of whos frame is whos .

Must NOT be a good seller. I posted about my purchasing a Handi Limited Edition Laminate .357 Mag the other day. Mine had been sitting in the store for a couple years I guess. Prefix letters are NR.
So, NEF must know what sells, and what doesn't.
SHOT MINE TODAY~! Mounted a Leupold 2.5-8X Matt VX-III. Wadcutters shot great at 50 yards,,about 3/4". OK,,,not 'match' grade,,but awful fun to shoot.
Also had some JHC hot .357 Mag ammo. Much louder,,but still a nice shooting rifle.
Gonna have fun with this rifle!

Stimpy, you hit the nail on the head!! Every gunmaker could do good business running an offer like this. I'm a lefty, and I've always wanted calibers in a LH bolt gun that are not cataloged -- .250 Savage or 7x57, for example. That means buying a stock rifle and having it re-barreled. It wouldn't cost a gunmaker much extra to take my order, pull the conponemtns off the shelf and assemble them, and ship to a dealer for me. The middleman is the only obstacle I can see -- there always seems to be a distributor between the manufacturer and the local gun shop.

for a fun round in the .357 Mag Handirifle to be used on squirrels and rabbits and such try loading some mid range .38 Special HBWC (hollow base wadcutters) with the bullet reversed so the hollowbase now becomes a big hollow point. We used to shoot these out of revolvers at vermin (rats) at the dump many years ago and it was blast!!!....<><.... :D

I would also like to get a 357 mag. but don't want to be without a frame for months. If they would make a complete rifle I would buy 2 one for me and one for my son.

Buy a couple frames in the classifieds and send em in, the 2 months it takes will be gone before ya know it, and I suspect very strongly that fitting time will be much less this summer!! ;)

Just an update.
I ordered a .357 mag 20 gauge combo in July last year. I'm still waiting. When Remington bought H&R the distributor here in Australia changed as well so I had to re order.
Mine will be the only one coming into the country, when it eventualy gets here.
 Americans are very lucky.
The importer here only brings in the basic models in the calibers they think people want.

I there a specific reason for your suspectin' this Summer will have a better turn around time? If you can't say for some reason, I certainly understand.

Look at the date of that reply Don.  ;) That said, summer has always been a slow time for Gardner, I suspect it will be for Ilion too, Gardner even offered discounts during the summer to encourage more accessory barrel business, Remington should follow suit as long as they get all their factory ducks in a row at Ilion!!  ;D
