need advice on boar hunting in s. mo.

i live in dodge city ks. and there are no wild hogs around here so i have no idea of hoe to hunt the little critters.i am planing to go to missouri and go hunting w/ my nefews. they dont hunt much and have little expierence,so i will have to be the ram-rod,and i would like as much info as you can help me with so i dont look and act a fool also saftey is my primary concern.advise on tatics and anything else you think would be helpful.
looking over fourm i have noticed the lack of shotguns used to take boar.i reload slugs for my 870 and they do quite well in general shooting.[i use wheel weights and they make a good hard round, very little expansion.]at 50 yds or less can put them on a 3 inch circle.max effective range /125yds.i have guns ranging from 220 swift, 243,25/06,30/30, 308,30/06,8mm,and 357 rifle. i load all my own rounds.any advice on bullet weight and velocity as well as optium engagement range.also my nefew has a large dog he wants to bring/never hunted i advised against.i will quit rambeling any help and or advice will be much appericated and heeded.thank you /bill

Hunt into the wind.  Eyes are poor but nose is keen, hearing medium so.  The standard advice: hunt food sources that have fresh sign.  As far as your 22 and 25's, they'll work fine but limit youself to head shots.  The 30 calibers and 357 have enough umph to penetrate the gristle plate if you happen upon a boar but make sure the bullet is of sturdy construction.  Hog hide is thick and tough enough before you get to the gristle plate.  Your shotgun is fine.  If buckshot is legal you may want to consider that.  I'd advise against taking the dog unless you want to practice emergency surgery.  One experienced hound against a pig is a fair fight.  A dog that's never been on hogs before is asking for trouble.

If you have never hunted hogs look up a known outfitter for that area and go with them. Food sources, water and cover are your items to key on. LEAVE THE DOG AT HOME!!! That is a good way to get a dog severly hurt or killed. Train the dog at home and then take it hunting. That way you can controll the lesson.
