45-70 which bullet for hogs?

  I have both Speer 400 grain flat points and Hornady 350 grain round nose available for my reloads. I'm sure either is great plenty for hogs but what are the plusses and minuses on the bullets?  Has anyone here fired either or both into a medium for expansion and penetration tests? My velocity will be about 1500 to 1600 for the 400 and another plus 100 fps for the 350. At least thats what the books says for my load range.

I have never fired the Hornady 350's.  The Speer 400's are rather soft.  The speer 350 in a much harder bullet.  Works great to penetrate the gristle plate, but I have had it fail to expand on deer.

 Thanks Greg. I had heard the 400s were soft. I'll be shooting meat hogs so I might want the softer of the 2.

I think most all the 350s are made for the .458 Win. Mag and the even longer .458 Lott. The idea is to use a lighter bullet and push it really fast to try and make such guns into what they have no business being ie, a long range plains game gun. I have my doubts you'll get much if any expansion from them in the .45-70.

Most all the 400s and 405s are made specifically for the .45-70. Push them to the velocity listed in the manuals for them in Marlin rifles and you'll get excellent performance.

     How critical is expansion with a .45-70 ?  If you get 100% penetration ?  It starts out about the size that .30-06 ends up as ?

  Well were back from Texas, my so, we'll just refer to him as old deadeye. Used my 45-70 to shoot a 150 lb sow on thehind quarters. We were using the 400 gr speers and needless to say there won't be quite as much sausage coming out of thehams of that hog. He shot the hog at about 60 yards using a lever gun level load. At the impact the hog rolled  then got back up and hobbled off about 30 yards before expiring. With that kind of shooting I'm glad we had lottsa expansion. The wound cavity was fist sized. I found pieces of the jacket in the wound. The 400 seems like a great soft critter gitter. BTW my daughter shot her hog in the head with a 30-30, no tracking needed. Most of all the kids really had fun.
