Scope sighting issues...
« on: March 20, 2007, 09:47:13 AM »
Tried sighting in my CZ550 Safari the other day...no good.  I'm using a Leupold VX-III in Talley quick detachable rings.

Fired first at 100 yards..couldn't print on paper.  Maxed out the scope in vertical adjustment, still not printing.  Went to the 50 yard range, and it prints 6" low.  Holes are in line with POA horizontally, but 6" low.  Scope is still maxed out vertically.

I'll measure my rings tonight to make sure there's nothing amiss there.  My worry is the rifle is bad, at least the dovetails.  Anybody have any input?  What could be going on?  Irons are right on (had to get a shorter front sight post from CZ), and the rifle will cloverleaf at 50 yards.

Do you have the factory cz rings?  Give those a try, if you do.  I would get in contact with Talley and CZ to help resolve this issue

Talley rings are the only ones I've got for this rifle...didn't come with CZ's rings.

I sent an e-mail to Talley...they're the ones who suggested measuring the rings.  I'm hoping the rings aren't the same length...easier to fix that than the rifle.  Also sent an e-mail to CZ with a synopsis of the problem.

OK...measured the rings.  I measured from the bottom of the ring's curve to the underside of the dovetail.  Rear ring is .002" taller than the front.  Is that enough to make a difference?  Doesn't seem like it to me.... :-\

I guess that it could be causing some issues.  Burris sells those weaver style rings with the posi-align inserts and according to them the .005" can change POI 5" at 100 yrds.  I would contact Talley and see if they would measure a different set of rings in the same place as the ones you have and compare the specs.  If the rings are in spec, you need to contact CZ.

Got an e-mail from CZ's Mike Eagleshield requesting I check the alignment of the receiver to the barrel with a straightedge.  I'll measure tonight, then send him the data. That guy's very responsive...told me if the barrel's off, let him know and he'll arrange shipping.  Right on!  Customer service ain't totally dead!

My brother went through a similar problem with a new Ruger, but he ran out of horizontal adjustment.  The dealer he bought the rings from was very helpful and ordered 3 different sets, not to mention what he had in stock.  Using a bore sighter, and "centering" the scopes adjustments, it was amazing the difference between ring sets.  In just the 2 Ruger factory sets we tried, there was 8" difference.  We ended up with a set of Burris, and the scope fell right into the center of adjustments.  It's a pain, but hopefully this is all thats wrong.  Let us know.

I was just thinkin', you could switch the rings front to back and see if the rifle prints 6" high at 50 yards that would eliiminate the diffrerence in ring height as the problem, I find it shocking that a set of $100 rings should be eve 002" different!
Guess I'll stick with those steel weavers with the snap over ring top. they are a PITA to level, but they are at least consintant in size.

Well...measured the barrel-to-receiver alignment, sent the data to CZ.  CZ provided a shipping address and work order number.  Looks as though the barrel is off.  My baby!! :'(

I'll be overnighting it here in a couple days.  Gotta find packing material.

Sorry for the silence, gentlemen (and ladies?).   Lemme give you all a compressed update...

Sent the rifle in.  There was a screw up with labeling, so it came back.  Sent out again, CZ received it.  They requested the scope and rings, so I those went next.   The rifle was checked in on April 19th...still in line to be repaired.  I'll be sending another e-mail in a couple days, asking for an update.  I would think they'd have at least started on it by now.

OK...called CZ today (27Jun) for an update.  They said it's done and it'll ship out to my FFL shortly.  Can't wait to get her back in my grubby paws!  Once it arrives I'll tell ya how it looks (the stock was changed)...then a range report.

Hey KDM:
Just a suggestion:   An old rifleman, Jack O'Connor wrote:   To get on paper when sighting in with a Scope.   Use a 24" small bore 100 yard target with a 1" bullseye.   Step off 25 yards for your test.   Fire 2 bullets into the target.  They should almost touch.  Between the 2 holes is your POI (point of impact).   If they are not close, consider you flinched, and fire one more bullet.   The 2 closest holes will be your POI.  Now adjust your Scope so that the POI wiill align with your POA (point of aim).   Now you should be able to go on paper at a 100 yards to finallize your adjustments. :)
