I have not yet done the 45/70.  I have done the 30.30 and it has potential.  I just tried them at 25 yds with open sites before I invested in a new scope.  It should group about 1.5 in at 100yds. Needless to say I am getting a scope for one on my 94s

I see that S.G. has them listed on their site for $23.47. I'm thinking about ordering some of those and the bulk 405 grain shells that they carry. I don't have any experience with the 405's either, I always shot 300 or 350grain in the past, but it seems to me that the 405 grain cartridges are the most popular.

My 45-70 shoots the 325 gr. leverevolution the best of any factory loaded bullets. The sad thing that after I e-mailed Hornady they are not going to offer the flextip bullet as a reloading round this year, maybe next year.

I've got a box of 'em. I wish I could tell you about a 200 yd shot on a 7x7 Elk, but I can't.  I have some 300 gr JHP handloads and some 405gr cowboy action loads that shoot good, I mean not that much recoil from my 22" handi.  I waited 6 weeks for this box of leverevolution from Sportman's Guide.

It shoots GREAT out of my 45-70 Handi and BC... cloverleafs from both, but I handload so I'm going to come up with something better ???

I have read or heard somewhere where these rounds are pretty hot and the recoil is much more than other factory ammo ... fact or fiction?

They shoot cloverleafs at 100 yards out of my 22" Handi. I shot one deer last year and it was bang, flop.
As for recoil my handloaded 300gr Rem hp over 50.0 of Reloader 7 seem to kick harder. If you want a real shoulder bruiser, load up some H4198 to the max level 2 loads.

Burnt:

Sorry for any confusion, but I was referring to bullet weights of ammunition that I would like to purchase. I currently am not reloading, but since I now have a "cannon" (BC) that will change in the near future.

50gr RL7 with a 300gr bullet is a max levergun load, 51-57gr would be a Ruger load if you look in the Lyman 48th.

The lever 325 grn rounds are not the most accurate load that I've shot but thats not all that I'm after. Sheer knock down power is a plus for me. I'm still waiting foor some other goodies from Midway before I go back to the range. Xtreem 45-70 fan!

There was a big discussion here about the reloading of these bullets and that Hornady would not sell them as a component.  Did they actually tell you that they would be available sometime in the future?

Their reply was that this years production was dedicated to factory ammo. May be available next year as a reloading component. By the way it took two e-mails and two months to get a reply from Hornady.

p.s. I can match the accuracy with nosler partition but don't save that much by handloading.

They shoot really well in my Handi.  In fact, better that any of my reloads so far.  I just picked up 2 boxes at a gun show in Ft Worth for $22 each.

I bought a box befor I even had a 45-70 rifle, I've owned two since and both shot 1" gp at 100 yds with the 325gn. Now I just bought a CVA barrel to try them out it.

they are good rounds but don't live up to the trajectory hype.
sighted in at 100 yards, the drop at slightly over 200 yards is not measured
in inches but several feet. At 250 yards I was able to bounce 2 into the target.
The target was a piece of poster board and I saw the bullet strikes a good 2.5 yards in front of the target.
On the plus side, they made big holes where they hit!

I shoot them in my 45-70. I sight to shoot 3 inches high at 100 yards. Recoil is a little stiff in my Handi, but not bad. Deer kills are one shot and they drop in thier tracks. They do make a big hole and waste some meat.  Forget ever shooting a turkey with them unless it is broadside. Only a little breast meat is left. Herb Philipsons has them for $ 31.00/box.

I can only speak for the .44 mag.  My Handi loves them.  I didn't measure the group, but I put 4 in the head of a turkey target at 100 yards.  I doubt I'll buy anything else.

One Sitka Blacktail and one Blacky both under 50yards and dead right then. Recoil is light compared to most 45/70 rounds I shoot. The Hornady is my light game round. Their brass is abit short for reloading

They're pretty darn close to the advertised 2050fps, it runs 2012fps in an H&R SS Ultra Hunter 24" barrel, Hornady made them for the Marlin XLR 24" barrel. They also ran out of the proprietary powder just after they first came out, those boxes were marked 1850fps. Regardless of what people think of it as far as being "hot", the 45-70 ammo is still a trapdoor load.

They have shot well for me in both the 30/30 and the 45/70.
My 30/30 i sighted in at 100 yards with the 150 Cor-loks and the Leverlution rounds shoot about 5" higher than that, nice tight group.
The results are about 7" high for my 45/70 which I sighted in with the 405gr Cor-lok Remington load.
Have lights? Thank a Lineman!
