357 Mag info wanted
« on: March 19, 2007, 09:46:20 AM »
A little while back I sold my Marlin 1894C to a cousin who had a problem with varmints culling his chickens. Since then I've been pining for another 357 carbine and was thinking that my G2 would be a great little platform with a 18-20" tapered barrel. My manuals indicate I should be able push a 125gr JSP close to 2200fps with this setup and that would make an awfully sweet little walking-around varminter for shots under 125 yards. Plus, if I load it with 158gr or 180gr bullets it would be fine for blacktails under 100 yards.

Are any of you guys shooting this configuration? If so, how do you like it?

Not a mag but I had a very nice .357 max carbine that I wish I still had. It would shoot anything you fed it including 38 specials. No doubt your .357 mag would be fine for whitetail deer at closer ranges.

olya,

I don't have that setup, but iffin I were to go that route with a 357 carbine barrel, it would definately be the 357 max route. Why just shoot 357 mag when you can shoot the super mag? Further 'n more energy....sounds like fun to me!

Dave.

i had virgin valley make me a 21 inch bull barrel. in .357 mag.
it's the only barrel i regret selling!!!!! it was an easy 200 yard pig or deer gun! i never loaded bullets lighter than 158 gr.  in it. but they were accurate, and so was the 180gr. wfn cast.
it had great balance and was just heavy enough that it didn't kick much. ( even with the stout loads)
 i sure miss that one!

Well heck, ask and ye shall receive. Thanks for the input guys.

I'm thinking that if I get the carbine barrel in 357 that I could always re-chamber it later to the Max. However, I believe that the standard 357 will meet my needs fairly well. I noticed that barrel on Ed's, in fact that was what got me to thinking about this. He's had it listed for about a year now. I think I'll give him a call.
