S&W 629 6" models quality???
« on: March 19, 2007, 09:07:26 AM »
Is there a quality difference between the different S&W 6" - 6 1/2" models.  I know one has the hi-viz sights, one is ported, one is exctly 6", the other is exactly 6 1/2".

I'm pretty partial to the exactly 6" model, but I want to make sure first!

They are both quality revolvers and it is your preference of choice as to which one you want most.  Mikey.

like mikey said the guns are basically the same. Me i dont care for ports on a .44 as they dont kick enough to warant them and i think fiber optic sights dont belong on a hunting gun as ive had to many problems with them breaking on my comp guns so id go with the more basic gun

They are basically the same gun, so what others have said rings true, go with what trips your trigger. I went thru the same quandary myself several years ago before I bought my 686. Since I had a Ruger 44 magnum before which tore my wrist up everytime I shot it, I went for the 6'' ported 357......and have never looked back. My youngest has shot full house 357 loads thru it since he was 8 and my wife also enjoys shooting it, mainly because of the light recoil.  Some say they don't like the flash and blast from a ported gun, but it has never bothered me. As a matter of fact my next gun will be a ported 44, either a 629, or the PC light compensated hunter. I believe the reason there's no hi-viz sights on the ported model is because the port is directly in front of the sight and the blast would either break it or burn it.

Hello & Happy Easter to all! My 1st time posting on this forum of GBO. I also am about to take possession of a 629-1 from my brother. It's an older (May of '88) 6" gun with Pachmayer rubber grips as well as the factory Goncalo Alves. I intend to get some smooth wood scalloped grips for it in the near future. I guess I should see how it shoots before I worry about slugging the bore & chamber throats......I will be loading for it. Can't wait! It's my 1st big-bore double-action in a very long time. jd45
