Limbsaver barrel band ?
« on: March 18, 2007, 06:49:04 AM »
I've seen rifles wearing the Limbsaver barrel device on Outdoor Channel. Anyone tried them? What was the result? Any truth to the report that an extra large rubber band will have the same effect?

Hate to say it, but it is junk and a waste of money. The reason you see them on TV is, advertising.

I've used one on a couple rifles that were shooting moa or better already, it didn't improve accuracy, but didn't hurt it either. A friend tried on on a Weatherby 270 Winchester shooting factory ammo, without the De-resonator, it was shooting 1½moa, with the donut and a little experimenting with position, it reduced the groups to ¾moa with no other changes. I've read of others that had similar results, it's just a poor man's BOSS. I will say that I've wasted more money on other products that had less value, at least the De-resonator has some potential as a cheap tuner. If you google deresonator, you'll get a bunch of user reports.

They offer one for heavy barrels now, my only complaint about the original small one, is it's hard to install and remove on bull barrels, the bigger one would be much easier, I'm sure. A little WD40 helps the small version tho.

I have to second what Quick said, as I have seen a fellow at my range playing with one, and it certainly did change his results for the better, or worse, as he adjusted it.  Good way of putting it - "a poor man's BOSS".  You won't find people getting consistently good results with the BOSS system either: works in some applications, sometimes doesn't. Being the compulsive buyer that I am, I bought one just to fool around with it.  I really don't have any rifles that I am dissatisfied with, but what the heck, maybe I'll try it, see if we can shrink some groups.  I just can't get past having that donut on the barrel though.  I think it was only about $12-$15, can't remember.  I haven't tried it yet.
I don't know whether a big rubber band will work.  I doubt I would try that.
Sims does make some claims as to the quality of their material for dampening vibration and technically some compounds are better than others for that.  I have wondered what the results would be if one tried that material to bed the forend on say, a Handi or an Encore, either fully, or in pieces, just enough to keep the forend off of the barrel.  I did look for some industrial vibration dampening material, but it was impregnated with an adhesive and I didn't want to muck up my forends and barrels.  I think the idea might have some potential though.

The only reason I have on on my 17hmr is the rifle came with it installed and as best I can tell it's done nothing to improve the rifles already stellar accuracy.

BUT It is very handy in that it gives you something to lean your rifle against other than the bluing when taking a wiz in the field, or crossing a fence ect ect. So it does have it's uses.

In my opinion the deresonator is the "Tornado" TM; Of the gun world

Yeah Krochus, I thought about that alternative use you found for it as well.  See, it wouldn't be a total loss if it didn't work. :D

Anybody got a picture of this thing??  I've heard of using a strip of innertube and a hose clamp  and moving it to different places along the barrel.
