If you hunt in open area, what 10X binocular do you use? I use the Pentax DCF WP 10 X 42, and like them a lot. The Pentax's are a pretty danged good fur the money. If I had the "money", I would purchase Swarovski EL's (they are only $1,000 more than the Pentax's). I need all the decent optics I can get out here in CA. I feel it should be called "gleaning", not hunting (for mule deer) in CA. I was looking at the deer count statistics for various states, and CA has approximately 750,000 deer in the whole state. Other smaller stateshave much higher counts.

If I was out East or the Midwest, I would probably use 7 X 40, 7 X 35, or 8 X 32 for the shorter ranges involved in hunting.

I really like the new Leupold Pinnacle binoculars. These babies are crisp, bright and the color transmission is great. I think that these are going to be my next pair.

I personally like the Nikon Monarchs and the Bushnell Elites. They are not the most expensive, but they are VERY nice.

I very much enjoy my 10x42 ELs. I'm a firm believer you get what you pay for in bino's. Would a $500-$600 bino do? Maybe, but when I will be glassing a 500 yard long hayfield loking for that chuck poking his nose up out of 4-6" clover, I want to see him. You get the Idea, try before you buy if possible.

I bought a pair of Swarovski binocs about 10 years ago. Probably the only hunting item I am really dependent on. I looked at a lot of others . . . and to really see the differences you have to have em all in front of you and look thru them. To look thru one pair, one day, and then a week later look thru another pair will not be an accurate comparison. But I would agree with Zachary, that especially for the money you cannot beat Nikons.

If I were limited to one 10X binocular it would be my Leitz 10X40's. I can honestly say I've never looked thru any that are sharper than these old Trinovids.

I've got a pair of Bushnell Trophy 10x25 that are not that great (although they are still working good enough and no problems at all). The main reason I purchased them is they are waterproof and only cost $70 when I bought them. My previous pair went swimming with me during a canoe capsize. Since the old ones were ruined I swore never to buy hunting gear that wasn't waterPROOF. I'm getting close (Gore-Tex everything, waterproof binos and scopes). Just technology isn't there yet as not everything has that option (GPS, Talkabouts, range finders, cameras) but it's coming. That is usually one of the top 3 things I look for when buying hunting gear as all it takes is one rainy day of deer/elk hunting to ruin things.

I use the same binoculars that you do (Pentax DCF WP 10 X 42) and feel they are the best buy for the money. I had a pair I bought about 8 years ago (not the WP's) and they were stolen out of my truck. I replaced them with the WP's. Don't think binoculars costing much more are that any better.
