modified 45-70 bullet mold

Having a couple of hundred pounds of scrap lead around that i use for my muzzleloaders and a bunch of wheel weights .and old hard lead shot, I decided that i would try casting some bullets for my 45-70 Handy.I wanted a .459 bullet mold but all of them were pretty expensive , except for the Lee hollow base mold. I like to load my 45-70 up around 1650 fps so the hollow base realy wasn't what I wanted.I bought it anyway, and with my handy little dremel tool ground off the base plug  so it cast a nice flat base bullet. On my scale ,with the alloy I used it weighs just 400 grns.

Well the bullets came out great   , but my attempt at lubeing the old fashioned way ,(melted lube and homemade cake cutter ) were horrible. so it's time to order some liquid Alox.

Any idea what diameter you are getting with this mold now?

I only removed the base plug. When I checked them with my mike they are just at .459.

Let us know how they group. I have about 60lbs of lead left over from my dads boat building days. I'm told it's very good for fishing weights but I wonder if it would cast well for the 45-70?

It may be a while before I get to shoot any of them . 18 inches of new snow has closed the access road to the range again, You will need to check the hardness of your lead. Pure lead can be easily dented with your thumbnail and is way to soft for rifle bullets.I harden mine up by adding wheelweights,or some old hard lead shot, lineotype works good to if you can get some. Always work with lead in a well ventilated area as some of the comercial hardening agents can be pretty toxic.(Arsenic)

The equivalent to the old Lyman bullet metal is 8lbs wheel weights 1 lb pure lead 1 lb 50/50 solder. This is an old formula the solder brings 1/2 lb of tin to the mix which helps the metal flow in the molds with out voids The old wheels weights have about 3% atinomy which is the hardener. You have to whatch out for new wheel weights some of them are zinc and will ruin your mix.
