Mauser 93 project...

While out and about today I stumbled across a Mauser 93 rifle with a cheapy Tasco 3x9x40 world class. My first thought was the start my .338 Federal I have been wanting... was in my pretty little hands for 52 dollars. But when I got home and did some research I found that they do not recommend anything with more pressure then that of a 7 mm Mauser. Obviously my thoughts of a .338 federal went by the wayside. I am looking for suggestions of calibers I might look at. I have already thought of the 300 savage and the 6.5x55.thanks

I have a 95 Mauser, that I had a 300 Savage barrel to and I have been very happy with it.  I have been mostly shooting cast lead bullets through it (167gr bullet with 20gr of IMR 4227).  The Pre-98 Mauser are limited in the factory rounds that can safey be used.  I think the rounds listed in the thread are all good ones for your action.

Wow, at that price, it sounds like a perfect candidate for a conversion to 7.62x39.  Cheap ammo, 200 yds capability easily, relatively accurate.  You can get a prechambered barrel, mag spacer, and new follower from Numrich for about $100, maybe a bit more.  Maybe a little extractor work for feeding and such, but not much. Get a cheap blue job and you're done. You could probably get it all done for $200-$250, including parts.  And if you ever sell it, you're going to make a good bit on it.  I see them selling on auctionarms and gunbroker for $350-$400 or more in fair condition, without a scope.
