Most shots are lethal they just don't know they are dead. The reason I use a heavy cal. is to disable him as quickly as possible.

This all very interesting for this old hunter from Maine.  I would really like to hunt a hog.  I would probably use my 44 sbh or my 444 Marlin because I don't know anything about hunting hogs.  I do know a little about bullet placement, but not on hogs.  I have killed deer, moose , black bear, and most animals in-between, but, have yet to shoot a hog.

I have used the 444 Marlin in a 14" Contender Hanhgun as well as several N.E.F. single shots chambered for the same caliber and in either gun, it was bad to the bone wnen it came to busting wild hogs....

Most of the guys around here use dogs for most of the chase work then they grab them. Sounds like fun but I think I would have to change my shorts.

I got my 350 LB Ark Razorback in Monterey TN. Got it with a Federal 300gr 44Mag Hard Cast from my Marlin 1894. One through the lungs, and one through the neck. He didn't go far.

I'm told that one of the guys who sometimes comes out to the Alpine Range in Fort Worth to visit with us poor boys, has several thousand acres in West Texas. He sits on top of a hill with a 50 caliber and picks them off at 1,000 yards. That's not quite the same as a helicoprter but they swear it's true. I've never met the gentleman but would like to. If he hates the hogs that much I'd be happy to take some off his hands with my 30-06 ... but not at 1,000 yards.

Pharmboy let us know what distance and what kind of tissue damage you get. What set up are you going to use to shoot the Hornady Lever rnds. I use an NEF with a 22" brl.

Dillohide you have one of the best for long distance. Is it scoped and have you worked up a load for it yet?

That's not my rifle but it is a rifle, I guess. They had it at our 100 yard range one time. The muzzle blast was so bad everyone had to get off the fireing line when he shot. The range told him he couldn't shoot there anymore. Yes it had a scope, sat on a tri-pod and looked like a 50 cal machine gun but was a bolt action. A box of 5 shells was $30 to $40. The range manager told me after he left that he shoots hogs with it out to 1,000 yards at one of his ranches and just leaves them where they drop. Guess if there is anything left he lets the ranch hands have it.
