Extra Barrel Question
« on: March 14, 2007, 06:45:44 AM »
Im a new member of GBO and I just purchased my first handi rifle because of the info ive read on hear...... My question is..... Why would someone bid a 45/70 barrel up to 160+ $$$ on ebay when you can send in and get one from nef for 87+ shipping and fitting.....Am I missing something here..  Also the 45/70 im refering to has iron sights no scope or anything extra............

One reason would be because there will be no waiting period (8 to 10 weeks +)  for the return of their new barrel/fitting from NEF's assessory barrel program.

Because they get in heated bidding not thinking and also the wait time to get your gun back from the factory can be 8 to 10 weeks. Welcome to the site.  ;D

First off , Welcome to GBO and the strange world of H&R / NEFs .

Now for your ?? Fitting a used barrel to a frame is not that hard in MOST cases  , with the standing breach style of the handi the headspace is perty much set as long as you have a good solid lock up on the frame and the proper gap between the breach face and the chamber , being around .001 to .002  , this can be checked with a standard auto feeler guage from any car parts store .

I have done all of my own fitting at home but any good smith can also do it very easy .

Thanks for the quick replies....... As this is my first handi and im planning on sending mine in for the trigger job and 2 or 3 barrels or maybe 4.  My question was mainly out of curiosity..... I guess the main question I have now is what barrels.... I have a 223 and im planning on getting a 30/30 and 44mag due to the fact that i have dies and alot of ammo for them already....now i just need to figure out what else to get so i only have to send it in once................

A must in the handi is the 45/70 , i have used mine for everything from P-dogs to pick-up trucks ( DON'T ASK )  ;D a 22 Hornet would also be a very good choice at the bottom end .

Ok the truck story , a few months ago when gas got to $3.00 + here in NW Ohio people were going to farms and stealing gas , we have 500 gal tanks that are 6 Ft above the ground , don't need a pump that way . the first time they just cut the lock and took about 200 gal . no big deal , the 2nd time they broke the nipple off and took what ever that could and let the rest just run on the ground .  >:(  >:(  >:(

Well the 3rd time i was waiting for them in the hay loft , as they pulled to the tanks with their lights off , i dropped 2 - 45/70 Piledriver JRs into the hood of the F-150 that they were driving , needless to say they did not move the truck or steal anymore gas.

They took off running but the local cops were able to use the plate number to find them .  ;D These dipsticks even used their own truck , had a 250 gal tank in the bed and 10 - 5 gal cans to boot .

It seems that they would hit a farm then wait for the tank to be refilled and come back when it had gas again .

that is friggin' awesome ... What size was that 2 shot group? Did you get the kind of expansion/bullet performance you expected? Did you think about shooting the gas tank they were filling?

When I lived back in Iowa, gas stealing was common then too.

One friend, when hit by the theives took the easy approach to catching the theives - he simply changed the lables on the GAS tank and the DIESEL tank.  They only got to the end of the lane the next time.

Good one!!! ;D ;D ;D

Twenty years or so ago, when I was building my camp in the woods I and was not yet known in town, just that I was "from away" some neighbors came to visit, among other things it was commented on that if I left my firewood stacked outside and I did not live there year round someone might steal my firewood, especially if it got real cold, I just told them the story I was told by an old timer when he had some firewood  "borrowed" from his woodpile, first I started out by honestly telling them I had a blasting license back home and if they ever needed something blown up, a rock , ledge, stumps, etc I would be happy to help them out for free. Then I told them I don't worry about someone taking MY wood because I salt the woodpile, they asked what I meant by that and I told them some of the firewood, cut and split oak and maple had charges of powder in them that would not only blow the thiefs woodstove apart but most likely the whole room the stove was in. When they asked me if I was serious I said of course I was, that after being a cop for so long no one was going to steal my stuff and get away with it, the evidence would be blown up and most likely burnt up in the ensuing fire and if the thief was alive to say he stole the wood from my pile so what, I would just testify that I never had any wood taken so how could that be? Some may have described me as that crazy state cop from away but I never had any firewood taken, never had my camp broken into either but that is another story about that "crazy state cop from away". Now if I can just remember which pieces of firewood NOT to use???....<><.... ;D

I checked the barrel on ebay for $160, it has the ejector, which some people like for hunting. I believe the barrels in the H&R barrel program are now all extractor type> i may be all wet on this as I am new to these addictive little things also.

you could be on to something BANG OW, many here, myself included, prefer the ejectors, especially for hunting, and doubly so if it is cold out where you hint and you may have gloves on, it can be quite difficult to dig that extracted shell out and reload under those circumstances. I have always held that the ejector fitted barrels will become more and nore valuable and desired the longer we get away from when they were produced. I still think $160 is way overpriced though, ejector or not, but then again I already have 2 ejector fitted 45-70 barrels, if I was looking for one it might be different....<><.... :)

An attractive feature would be a barrel with an ejector that could be converted to extractor mode by driving out a roll pin and then back by simply putting it back in.
