What's your most accurate shooting varmint rifle?
« on: March 12, 2007, 05:03:47 AM »
Was just wondering who is shooting what for varmints?

Exactly how accurate are they?

What do you considered to be the minimum accuracy for varmint hunting?

Thanks,

At what distance are we talking about? I have a 17HRM that on a calm day will stack bullets at 100yds. I know a guy that says accuracy doesn't start till you are at 500yds! I shoot a contender pistol that I can shoot through the same hole at 50yds, at 100yds under an inch and at 200yds it will shoot four shots all on a 21/2" post-it, at 300yds the bullets really open up. On the same day I took my Remington 700 and out of a cold barrel, shot a 4 bullet group that all 4 bullet holes touched at 200yds. I am proud and pleased as punch with those two rifles, but that Contender is accurate!

I shoot a rifle well and a pistol, alright, better than most but not nearly as well as others. I think that unless something is wrong with the gun, all can shoot better than we are capable of.

I consider the minimum accuracy for varmint hunting to be what ever is required to kill your target with one shot. To be honest, I haven't met many people that shoot well or accurately over 200yds. I have seen some incrediblly accurate guns that can shoot exceedingly well with the right person behind them. I just have not seen that many gifted shooters. I do not consider myself to be a great shot, just alright, with alot to learn!

I have a Savage 110 in .243 that is capable of shooting a heck of a lot better than I can.  It is a combo that came with a Simmons 3-9x32 scope which is not great but works.  I can usually keep groups just under 2" at 200 yards.  The good thing about a .243 is, if you can rifle hunt deer in your state or area, this rifle can serve double duty.

Right now it's a .257WBY Mk5. Under the right conditions will print cloverleafs at 100yds and into a quarter at 300 if I do my part. Even handloading is a bit expensive with this one so I'm looking for a nice .204 Ruger. :D

Mine is a Remington XR 100 in 204 Ruger.  I haven't finished working loads for it, but have gotten groups at and below 1/3" at 100 yards with HSM 32 gr.'s.

Rem 700 VS in 22-250.  I've won factory matches with that rifle.  I also have a XR-100 in .223 but I use that for match only.  I've shot one (1) group in competition that measured .1XX.  I've also got a "Bull Durham"  ::) on a Rem 788 platform in .222.  Haven't finalized a load for it yet but it's showing potential.

I have an old Sako single shot in .222 that has shot 5 shot groups under .2 at 100yds. and a Rem 700 custom in 17 M4 that will shoot almost as well.

My most accurate small cal. is a Rem 788 in .223 with a Tasco 3 x 9.  At 100 yds. it out shoots my 700 BDL. with a 4 x 16 scope.  I've tested a lot of handloads thru both rifles and the 788 groups are about half of the 700's.   I bedded the stock and adjusted the trigger of the 700 but it still can't compete with the stock 788.   The 700 easily shoots less than a moa but I'm saving the 788 for serious shooting.  So far I haven't missed a varmint because I was carrying the wrong gun.  If I head for p-dog country I'll take at least three rifles including the 788 and might even put a better scope on it.

My most accurate varmint bolt action is a Savage 250 AI bull barreled rifle, sub 1/2 inch accuracy.  My most accurate semi auto is a DPMS HB Ar type rifle with sub 1/2 inch accuracy in Win 308.

Mine is a Savage 10FP in .223 with a B&C stock ... other than that, it is all factory ... best groups to date: have two 3 shot groups under .200" with Hornaday Vmax 55gr ... probably averages (just guessing without doing a lot of math) .400" to .500" groups @ 100 yards ...

My most accurate is a Savage  model 12 FVSS in 223.  It will shoot just about anything into a half inch at 100 and with loads it likes it will consistently print below .3.  My favorite to shoot is a Winchester model 70 heavy varmit 22-250 from the Winchester custom shop.  The rifle fits like a glove and is very comfortable to shoot.  It is no slouch but the Savage shoots a bit better.

mine is a ruger 77V in 220 swift it will shoot 1/4 of an inch and a savage 22 hornet in a 93G 1/2 groups at 100 yards 3 shot for both. The most accurate rifle that I ever owned was a winchester model 70 coyote 308 it would be one ragged hole. I have a cz 223 that I am working on, and a stevens 200 in 308 that is going to become a 22-250

Rem 700 VS in 22-250.  Bold and action trued, trigger adjusted by me.  Topped by a bushnell 3200 7-21 x40 mill-dot.  Gun sits atop the factory HS stock.  Most acurate gun ive ever fired.
I am not afraid to make an example out of you

Winchester Model 70 Ranger in 30-06.  Yep, one of the crappy push feed ones that didn't shoot very well.   ::)  It was the most accurate rifle I've ever owned, it would put five 180 Failsafes in one ragged hole at 100 yds, and most of everything else under an inch for five shots too.  Not really a varmint gun, but I used it for one, just cause it shot so well.  Expensive to shoot those premium loads at coyotes and crows though.  I sold it, stupidly. I was at camp one year, and a guy saw it shoot, and offered an obscene amount of money for it.  I bought it for $300, put about $350 in it (stock, parkerized, bedding, new bottom metal).  When he started laying down the $100 bills, I stopped him at $1100.   :o  I told him that I didn't have that much in it, he said he didn't care, it was the best shooting 30-06 he'd seen and he wasn't leaving without it.  Of course, I wish everyday I still had it.  Oh well, what's a guy to do?   :-\

Tikka Whitetail Hunter Master Continental .223

This gun is a real throw back to just pure workmanship fit and finish.  It is as accurate as any rifle I have shot.  On a sled it will shoot sub-moa, in fact close to sub 1/2" moa at a 100yards.  It weights about 10 lbs with a Elite 4200 4-16.
I don't think I could ever sell this firearm but some times a CZ 527 in a .223 might be a better choice for varmint hunting.  This is evrything I expected as to accuracy and old time blued and wood looks.  It graces's my gun cabinet and usually is the first one other hunters ask about either at the range or at home.  This is a keeper.   Buckfever

Well it's not my new Savage 16FSS in .204 Ruger. All factory ammo keyholing, primers are cratered. Yes, I've sent it back to the factory. >:(

Which one ? ::)  I have a Ruger no. 1 in 22-250 , a Remington VLS in 22-250 , a newly aquired Remington SPS in 22-250 and a Savage Classic in 22-250. All are quite capable of half inch or better .I had trouble getting real good groups with the Savage but finnaly got her punched in to one ragged hole. Sure wish I didn't have so many to choose from and load for but my hay has just been cut and the hogs are many. It's war !
