Who/What/Where
« on: March 11, 2007, 02:38:01 PM »
I have long wanted a small bolt or semi-auto capable of handling pistol cartridge length rounds with an interchangeable barrel capability.  I would prefer a nice sporter configuration rather than the military look.  Something reminescent of the older 'garden gun' concept, possibly something as an update to the Destroyer Carbine.

Haha.  OK, so who might know of something or some way I could do this; what sort of a platform could I use (brand name or action size; and, where could I either get it done or even begin?????????

I do thank ya'll for your help.  Mikey.

For something like this, the best person may be yourself.  I don't know anyone who specializes in this kind of conversion.  You can barrel changing equipment from Midway, Brownells, and other sources.  You could send the gun to a smith to do the chambering if you aren't comfortable with doing it.  You'd have to standardize a cartridge head to keep from changing the bolt back and forth.  Probably an old mauser small ring action would work best.  I think that the biggest issue would be getting the short rounds to feed from the magazine.  You'd have to have a considerable spacer in the mag, and have the follower cut to fit, and then tinker with spring tension, maybe the feed rails, the extractor, etc.

Rhineland Arms make conversion kits to switch Mauser and Enfields to shoot pistol cartridges.  You get a new barrel, an adapter for the mag well, the correct pistol mag, etc.  But they aren't switch barrel rifles.

If you can deal with a single shot, what you're looking for already exists on the Handi Rifle, Contender, and Rossi platforms.  All of which are a lot cheaper than trying to convert a bolt action or semi auto.

kyelkhunter:  I had thought about the Rhineland Arms and was thinking about sending off a M48A Mauser for conversion.  Thanks.  Mikey.

Savage barrels are interchangeable if you have a headspace gauge for each barrel right?  If so, just get a Savage action and then buy custom chambered barrels and get a headspace gauge for each...  Otherwise, go T/C... not a bolt gun but...

Ooops, wasn't thinking.  AR-15 upper recievers can be had in many chamberings.

Duh yeah, I forgot all about getting different uppers for an AR.  I guess it depends on what pistol rounds you want to shoot.  The Savage guns would be the easiest to change barrels on, but the bolt face wouldn't allow much tweaking for different rim sizes.  For a quality gun, I still think that a T/C Contender would be the easiest route to go.
