Scope ring height
« on: March 11, 2007, 10:24:45 AM »
I want to install a Simmons Prairiemaster 4X16xX40 scope on my new (well to me anyway) handi 204.  What height of rings should I be looking at?  Any other considerations when installing?

                                                              thanks,

The thing that will limit you is the hammer clearance to the eye bell on the scope.  I used Burris medium Z rings with the plastic inserts and a 4-12 Swift scope.  I had to trim a little off the tip of the hammer with that setup.  High rings would have cleared but looked ugly.  Larry

I mounted a scope with a 50mm objective bell on my handi and used extra-high rings.  There is plenty of clearance between the hammer and the ocular lens bell but with a 40mm scope a guy could use high rings and get by with them but the hammer clearance will be close.

I use medium Burris Signature Zee rings almost exclusively, very seldom do I need high rings, even a 50mm scope can be mounted medium with no hammer interference IF the power ring and ocular bell are user friendly. As Larry mentioned, take a little off the tip of the hammer and it will make a big difference. As Larry also hinted at, high and extra high rings aren't desirable.
