Need alittle input on scopes
« on: March 09, 2007, 05:29:56 PM »
As I said in an earlier post. I just bought a new synthetic handirifle stainless 22-250 bull barrell. Didn't buy a scope yet. This is only my second rifle, have a Rem. 7600 270 win. synthetic also. I have a Barska 3-12X50 euro pro on the remington, it works fine for a deer rifle. I do have a problem seeing the crosshairs right in alot of scopes. I was looking at a BSA 8-32X44 side wheel focus mil dot scope. Looks very clear to me, does anyone have one on a varmit handi. Is it any good? Thanks for any input.

Midway sometimes has the Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5x20x50 scopes on sale for $99. It is a great buy, but not always available. They are excellent scopes, with a clear brite image all the way up to 20x. Check the website and see if you can get one. I bought one a while back and put it in the safe. I'm looking into a Handi in .223, and when I finally find the gun, I'll have the scope ready to go. I don't like BSA - had a couple problems with point of impact shifting, but that's just my opinion.

If you have a few more bucks to spend, look at the Nikon Buckmasters. They are also an excellent value. I have two of them - one on a Ruger M77 in 30/06 and one on a Ruger M77 in .350 Rem Mag. No problems with either one. I think that the Buckmaster line is better than the Monarchs, and less expensive.

i have to agree with daddy (that felt weird to say).  The simmons was available two days ago at midway, and had it still been when i bought my last scope that would have been what i purchased.  If it is not still available go with the 6x18x50 banner, you cant go wrong with it.

The WTC18 is a good scope optically, but it has a very fat reticle, that and the krinkle finish are the only problems with it. :(

The crinkle finish does take some getting used to. It doesn't seem to be as bad on the one I just got as it was on the first one I bought about a year ago. I agree with quickdtoo - the crosshairs are heavy, but I haven't had a big problem with them. I ordered a Bushnell and a Tasco varmnt scope and returned both of them because at high magnification the image was milky and dark. I haven't seen this problem in the Simmons.

I think BSA's are good scopes as long as you don't try them on any heavy recoiling rifle. They are clear, track good, and have a finer crosshair than most others. The old discontinued Classic 3-12x50 was an excellent .22 centerfire scope.

I must be turning into an optics snob, cause I put a Burris Black Diamond on my 22/250 Handi.  The only fault I can find with it was the price but that bite will eventually fade into forgetfulness and I will have one of the brightest and clearest scopes made in the USA.  If you buy something because it is less money as I have done in the past, you may regret not looking at better glass and picking a scope that will do your eyes a favor.  I have bought the low end optics in the past and now don't have any of them and all I can think of is the money I wasted on them rather than all the money I saved by purchasing them first.  Thats my 2 cents worth on this subject.

I have to go with lucky on this one.  I also went with Burris on my .223, the Fullfield II not the black diamond so my bite will fade away a little bit faster.  However it is one of the nicest scopes I have.  I have a couple of older leupolds that are great and would have no doubt in another one, but the Burris was a little less and just as nice in my opinion.  Then again, just my $.02, whatever works for you is the way to go.
