22 Hornet Question
« on: May 12, 2003, 01:31:04 PM »
I picked up a used Ruger 77/22 last fall. It had a 3-9 Tasco on it which I have sinced removed. For you guys that have Hornets, What kind of scopes do you use? I'm leaning toward a fixed to put on it.

Any other thoughts or opinions.

TIA

Just pulled a Burris Signature 2-8 off mine and sold it. Am about to put a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10 back on it. Had a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15 on it once but decided that was too much scope for the little rifle.

I shoot a .221 Fireball, which is similar to the hornet.  My current 7x scope is not enough. I'd go with at least a 9x for maximum power in a variable. 12x would probably be better.  The issue is that the gun is capable of taking prairie dogs at over 200 yards, and at 7x the crosshairs cover the target.

I have Burris 6-24X on both of my Ruger Hornets.  Works fine for taking those shots at smaller critters.  Lawdog

Hey thanks guys. I needed some different ideas for this rifle. I was thinking on a 8 power and then saw weaver K series 15x for sale in a Natchez catalog. I'm still not ruling a variable out yet. This will be my carry rifle now for when my boy and I are out in the smaller fields hunting fence rows.

Urika20,  I put a 4-16 on my Hornet for two reasons.  First,  I can power down for close shots and get a decent  fov.  Second,  for the smaller critters at longer ranges and targets,  I can go to 10 to 16 to fine tune the shot.  The Hornet is getting stretched past 200-250 yrds.  If you are going farther than that, .222 or .223 just might be a better choice.

I kind of like Graybeards choice of a 2.5-10.  I seldom go as high as 16.

Question for Questor.  What is your overall opinion of the .221 Fireball?

Likely it will be a mid range variable. I don't forsee shooting much beyond 200-225 yds. I'll surf back thru the Opticzone again. They seem to have really good prices.
