Does anyone have any experience with Choate stocks? They are made of polypropylene. What is this material like? Thanks.

Terry,

I have a Tikka Stainless Synthetic and it too is made out of polypropylene.  This is a special material that is extremely durable.  In fact, there is a boat company that makes boats entirely out of this material.

My Tikka Synthetic stock is much more durable and solid than my cheap plastic stocks on my Remingtons.  The Winchester stocks are better than the Remington stocks, but not as good as the Tikka stocks.

Now, I would not rate the Tikka stocks as good as the HS Precision or McMillan stocks, but, again, they are much better than the Remchesters.

Zach, from what i've heard...the Rem's stock (700VSF with SS heavy flutes barrel) was from HS Precision. It is spider web -greyish color, alum bedding block, but with a very bad rubber pad "Remington" on the butt....
Is that true?...... :?:
In advance,
Sebastian.
Life is like a story, it is the "content" and not the "length" to make it good....

Ever looked at a Savage synthetic stock. Well Choate makes them. I will say I am not to happy with my Savage stock, darn thing is litterally falling apart.

Yes, it is.  HS Precision makes the stocks for the Remington Senderos and Remington VSSF rifles.  I think that HS Precision and McMillan make the best aftermarket stocks.

As for the Choate stocks,  I don't know anything about them.  All I am saying is that the material is a good material as it is in my Tikka.  However, there may be different ingredients in the mixtures.  As such, I have no experience with Savage Synthetic stocks either.

Hogfan,

Please describe how it is "literally falling apart."  It must be pretty bad.

I have a varment model on a Savage 110 tactical and love it. It's been weighted down with lead for weight so it's strictly a bench gun at a little over 18lbs. Very rigid stock. I didn't care for the tactical model as the hand grip is too large for my hands, also the hand grip on the tactical is very sharply checkered.  KN

Choate Stock on Vz24 Mauser
I put together a 7mm Mauser using a military barrel and a Choate stock.

The Choate stock is all molded plastic, as best I can tell.  It is very basic - you get what you pay for.  The more expensive stocks seem to be laminated out of fiberglass and include piller bedding or even a machined bedding block.

The fit was lousy, but a glass bed job with acra glass, tinted a matching gray, fixed that.  The stock felt soft, so I filled the first 4" of the forarm with layers of balsa wood and acra glas and also reinforced the molded voids just behind the bedding block with acra glas.  The stock now feels stiff, and the accuracy is very good.

OK for the money.

Zachary,

To begin with, It's suppose to be pillar bedded, well it's not, and the screw has busted out the side of the stock. I noticed this the first time I took the stock off the gun. It's flimsy as all get out, and the grip cap fell off in my hand while shooting one day. It was screwed into the grip, and a tube of plastic broke at the base. I mean it still does the job, but it looks crappy, and it's true you get what you pay for. I'm now looking for a new stock for it.
