Sighting in
« on: February 26, 2007, 08:51:25 AM »
Ever since I picked up an X-bow I have been shooting (target) using the peep sight and pins that came with it. I read on this forum that some of you use a red dot sight and some use a rifle scope.  I would rather not use a red dot (Just my luck the batteries would die while I am hunting).  So those who use a scope, are you talking about a regular rifle scope?   What magnification are you using?  When using a rifle scope at what distance are you sighting in?  I'm not sure my bow has a rail to mount a rifle scope on but will see tonight...Thanks....

Most  don't use a rifle scope,  we use a scope made for a xbow, most manufacturers make a mount and scope for their xbows usually in the 2 to 4 power range as they are easier to sight in at the short ranges for xbows 20 to 50 yds.  I use an Excaliburr vari zone scope on all my xbows.
What brand of xbow do you have, then we can answer further.

I bought a slightly used Horton bow.  It has 3 fiber optic pin sights with a peep sight type thing on back.   It seems fine and I can likely get it all  sighted in but would  probably only use 2 pins for the up close hunting spots I have..

Thanks Digger.  I bought some Horton bolts over the weekend that are a bit lighter than the ones that came with the bow.    Suddenly it isn't too hard to sight in.  I ahve only sighted in 2 pins, zero yards to a bit over twenty so far.   I did learn to keep my thumb (on non trigger hand) out of the way when shooting though.  That smarted a good bit and took most of the nail right off.  Worst part is it kept the bolt from hitting dead center.  LOL   Live and learn I guess.

Mark- i almost broke my thumb that way earlier this year and have heard of people doing that. I am ultra careful now believe me.

I use a 4x cheapie scope but that is plenty out to 30 yds. I love crossbow hunting for deer almost more than gun season.

Jal5,  is it a 4X crossbow scope or a rifle scope?   I emailed our Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept to ask why Texas hasn't come up with an Xbow season like other states and got a crummy answer that didn't answer my questioin.  He just stated what the book says.

I don't think its a special xbow scope, its a simmons 4x fixed power scope. Does the job. I did have to shim it a little to get the adjustment I wanted but it works fine. I am comfortable to 40 yds. with it which is enough.

We don't have a special xbow season in Ohio either, but we can use it throughout the long reg. bow season here :D

Digger, I also have an Exalibur Xbow, Exomax with standard stock. Where did you get that wood stock, that looks fantastic?
I use 3 dot, red dot sight on mine. Supposed to be 20, 30, 40 but with this bow it's 20, 40, 50. At 30 yards aim between the dots. I will probably replace it with Excalibur sight, how adjustable is that sight?
