Old man and 25/06
« on: February 25, 2007, 08:33:41 PM »
When my son was born my dad and I decided we both needed to buy ourselves something..no real reason, lol, it was just a feelng we both got.....Good timing as the wife gave it the go ahead.  I ordered a pistol that's now chambered in 22 K-hornet, and he ordered a rifle in 25/06.  He ordered the prohunter BECAUSE of the flex-stock.  He was a magnum guy for years, but he had an accident a few years ago..then last year he herniated a disk in his upper neck..now he can't deal with recoil..at all..

I should have asked this before he ordered the barrel...but I'd like to try to get an idea as to the kind of recoil he can expect with this gun.  He's had it for about 3 weeks and has yet to shoot it.  I'm going to shoot it first so he doesn't get hurt in the event it does have a kick.  If it is bad, he can have it sent out to get some kind of a muzzlebreak..but I'd like to have a heads up so I can let him know what to expect.

What he has been shooting is a pre-64 Model 70 .243 featherweight.  He's shot the gun 5-6 times and has yet to have a problem..so try to compare it to a fairly light .243's recoil so I can explain things as best as possible.

With the flex teck stock, the 25-06 will be a very mild kick.

I have a 25-06 PH and the fet recoil  feels less than my 243 handi. May want to let him shoot with a shooting pad to start to get a feel for it. I use to use a 2'' thick sponge pad when shooting a bunch, expec. with the ultra mags, and they work great. Try this for a few shots and then he will know if he can try without.

good luck, DM

I have one PH stock and it does not kick much.  The blast was a little more than I was expecting with the long barrel.  Part of that could be the new roof on our range is metal and too low so everything seems louder than it should there.

The 25-06 has more case capacity than a .243 and will shoot 120g bullets 2900-3000fps compared to the .243's 100g bullet going the same speed. Though recoil will only be 3ft.lbs more than the light weight 7.75lb scoped Model 70 it will be somewhat deminished by the flextek.
If you reload you can always slow things down to more comfortable speeds. Drop the 25-06 120g bullet down to 2700fps and it will feel like factory 30-30's in a carbine, 11ft.lbs.

If you don't reload you might want to lok into reduced recoil factory loads.

I would think you're going to want to diiminish the recoil as much as possible.   I would have a muzzlebreak just for precaution.  You can feel good for a long time, but it only takes one instance of jarring that disc to cause it to bulge and he'll be down again.
