45/70 Loads for Contender
« on: February 22, 2007, 04:50:39 PM »
What category of 45/70 loads can the contender handle?  I know the encore can handle up to Ruger No1 levels, but is the contender limited to Trapdoor level rounds?

I think it was Redhawk that had contacted the tech at T/C and they said for Contenders it was limited to trapdoor models and for Encores it was at Marlin standards.  On the same post people had commented that they had been using very hot loads in their firearms for a long period of time without incident..but it's always best to follow manufacturer recommendations.

Gdbyrd, you are right. There are always people that want to push there guns to the max. I don't, I like to find the most accurate. Speed without accuracy is not a good combination.

My feeling on it all is, if you want to push your gun to the next level, you should of bought a bigger gun.  ;D

bjgunner, a few reloading manuals will have load data for the contender listed, you will see that the contender stays in the trapdoor level. Also, I own a Encore 45-70 and would not shoot a Ruger #1 level in it. The high side of the marlin loads are the low side of the Ruger #1 loads anyway's. Hope this helps.
