45/70 or 460 S&W bbl
« on: February 22, 2007, 07:46:05 AM »
I have been debating this in my mind for awhile now.  What are the pros and cons of each.  Anybody have experience with either or both of these?

I have had both in Encore barrels, I like them both, but went to the Revolver for my hunting needs and wants.
I think the 460 offers the ability to shoot a smaller bullet very fast, and the 45-70 offers the ability to use a lot bigger bullets if you decide to go that route.
If I had to pick one, it would be in a Encore handgun, I would go with the 460 Mag.

S&W uses a variable-twist barrel for their 460.  That big ole bullets seems to speed up rather than slow down!
Does anyone do that in their Encore barrel?

Even if they don't, I would still go for the 460.   It also shoots 454 and 45 Long Colt.

I don't think anyone is doing the gain twist in an Encore barrel.

I don't think the gain twist is needed in a single shot if it has a decent throat. In the revolver the bullet is moving across the cylinder gap than slamming into the rifling.

I would not worry about it. I had a 460 Mag in a 15 inch Encore barrel. It was very accurate as it was.
jjvw, has hit on a good point.

Gain-twist barrels are a fad that just won't go away.  They have been tried for well over a century by many barrel makers but they never seem to catch on.  There is a reason for that.... ::)

OK why then did S&W do it? It sure was not a marketing ploy. They tried the standard rifling and could not stabilize the faster bullet and then went with the gain twist.  The S&W 460 mag is a tack driver.  So it did work with this application.
The reason why the gain twist does not work in some applications is, the standard rifling works better to stabilize the bullets used.

I read somewhere, I don't remember where (I have trouble remembering how to log on) that the reason Gain-twist rifleing is not used to any extent is cost of production.  I would like to see a side-by-side test for accuracy, velocity, and recoil.

Seems to me that the Colt civil war rifled musket had gain twist and it really shot well.
