The cartridge is originally a military catridge, like many fine rounds started out.  You can safely say that the 7x57 has cleanly taken anything that walks, crawls, flies, swims, and slithers around the world.  It is an excellent round for just about any game, and almost the perfect round for deer, IMHO.  In a fine rifle like you describe, it's even better.

The 7x57mm Mauser in the 98 action is often referred to as the perfect rifle.  Excellent cartridge and ballistics with little recoil in an action that can handle magnum caliber rounds.  The 7x57 is an excellent hunting cartridge out to about as far as you can see them but I usually limit my shots to 200 or so yds and the 7x57 is easily capable of that.  HTH.  Mikey.

Andy I used my 7x57mm and 160 grain bullet handloads to kill an elk at 325 yards with a single, broadside shot. I also used it on whitetail deer, mule deer, antelope, wild pigs, javalina, coyote and wild turkey. It has a mild recoil and is an excellent caliber for a wide variety of game. It is, however, a handloader's proposition because the ammunition manufacturers, with the exception of Hornady and a couple of others, download the caliber. Reloaders can safely reach 3,000 feet per second velocity with 140 grain projectiles, yet, ammo makers keep it down to 2,660 fps, which is still plenty good to take deer. A professional African hunter in the early1900s knocked off several hundred elephants with the cartridge with perfect brain shots. It just gets the job done. Hang on to that treasure of yours.
