44 mag Tracker or Kimber 460 Rowland?
« on: February 21, 2007, 08:23:51 AM »
I'm looking for some advice. I'd like something at the 44 mag power level that won't pull my pants down and is less than $400. So I'm thinking of either getting the 4" Tracker in 44mag (~$400), or converting one of my Kimbers to 460 Rowland (~$300). What would you do?

Buy the tracker. Sounds like a good reason to buy another gun.

What are you looking to use it for?  If you are thinking of plinkying, a semi auto that can put out that much power could be a good time.  I have always been a big fan of revolvers for hunting, though many people do use semis.

I also agree that any excuse to put something new in the case is good enough for me.   ;D

There are times in my wanderings when I would like something with more "owie factor" than .45acp, if I need to put some hurt on a 500lb bitey-scratchy critter. I owned a S&W M27 before, and I'm not a fan of 5lb handguns. The Tracker is a low-cost, light-weight 44mag. I've handled them at a couple shops and they seem relatively well made. The 460 Rowland would make my old faithfull Kimber an interesting carry piece. 5 shots, versus 8. Slight edge in power with the 460. Another cartridge to reload carefully versus stomping .45acp out by the zillions on the blue press. Decisions, decisions.

My vote would be for the 460.  I have a Tracker in 45 ACP and love it, but I think I got lucky and got a good, functioning revolver.  I thought about the Tracker in 44 mag., but all of the bad press has kept me from going for it.  I'm on the hunt for a good, used Kimber with a steel frame.  The two I own now are the lightweight frames.  I know Brownell's has the kits.  The idea of getting that kind of performance out of a 1911 is way cool.   8)

Nice. But is that a .44mag or .44 special? I was thinking more of something that could kill more than paper :)

Joe at RealGuns just did some Chrono work with a 4" Taurus 44mag and found the results to be less than what his 460 Rowland delivered. That kindof makes me lean towards the old slab side.
