760 OR 7600 IN 35 WHELEN
« on: May 09, 2003, 10:35:20 AM »
I would like a 35 Whelen pump to go along with my 30-06 pump. Can anyone tell me where I might be able to find one.  I have been looking in the used racks and at gun shows but I have yet to find one.  I have been carrying my 760 pump in 30-06 for about 20 years now and would like to have another in 35 Whelen.

send it off to Gander Mountain and they will do the rebarreling for you.  Check their web page for prices and decide for yourself.

The only other way is to get lucky or pry mine from my cold dead hands.

I love mine and here in AK I keep thinking I need something bigger, better.  But a 250 grain bullet at 2600 fps is plenty and the recoil is not  that bad.

WN:

It took me 3 years of looking to find mine here in Ontario.  I almost missed that one - it hit the shop when I was away hunting.  Luckily a friend saw it, and an e-mail was on my machine when I got home.

There was a note on the boards that Grices in Clearfield PA had a new batch of Whelen pumps/7600 in.  if you don't live in or near PA have your local FFL get in touch.  They do wholesale and retail.  Good luck

Go to Yahoo and get in yellow pages/classifieds and look for sporting goods in Clearfield. PA.  I live about 3 hours drive away in PA and have been through Clearfield a few times but never to Grice's.  But anybody I have ever heard of dealing with them claims that they are pretty good at what they do.  They have enough volume they special order special calibers in for 7600 models. I indirectly got a 35Rem, synthetic stocked 7600 from a local FFL that came from them.  Have seen 25-06, 7mm 08, 260 advertised.

358 in a 7600

DL,  I bought the 35 Rem with the idea of reaming it out to 358.   Gun shoots so well I decided to leave it alone in 35 Rem.   35 Rem will do almost anything a 358 will do and recoil a lot less than either 358 or Whelen.  I owned a Whelen once and it really got my attention when  touched off.  Never heard of Remington doing 358.   They would like to think that the 350 Mag would be the one you really want.

Recoil
« Reply #10 on: June 13, 2003, 02:34:56 AM »
I had the idea i wanted a 35 Whelen pump.  I was talking to a fellow who sold his because of the recoil.  He said it was very unpleasant to shoot. I have a 30-06 pump and can handle it fine.  How much more does the Whelen recoil than the 30-06 pump.  I really want the Whelen but I want to be able to shoot it.

WN:

I use 220 grain copper jacketed bullets with a long shank, and my 7600 in Whelen does hit harder than my 760 carbine in 30-06 shooting 180's.  However, its not all that bad.  It doesn't recoil as hard as any of the 3 magnums I've owned, nor as hard as a .444 Marlin or my BLR in .358 Winchester.  I'd guess it wouldn't be that much different from the 30-06 with 220's.
