.500 MAGNUM!!!
« on: February 20, 2007, 04:41:31 PM »
I picked up another Handi Rifle today, this one chambered for the .500 Magnum, along with three boxes of ammo (Magtech 400 gr. JSP and 275 gr. JHP, and Federal 275  gr. JHP (Barnes bullet)).

Only had time for a half dozen rounds this afternoon, but man, what a blast! (Pun intended).

This thing is a feral hog's worst nightmare!  ;D

Right now it has the factory adjustable "Fire" sights... I'll have to think some on what kind of optics might be best for this little cannon!

I'm up to five frames, 7 barrels... just a drop in the bucket compared to many here, I know! ;D

Congrats. I just got my 500 S&W in on Monday and haven't had a chance to go shoot yet. Which of the factory rounds did you shoot and how much kick did it have with them? Charlie

i know the price for ammo is rediculous.  i just got my dies, brass and bullets in the mail today, now all i need is powder and primers, and i am ready to load my 500 and 204 ruger.  kind of opposite ends of the spectrum huh?? ;D ;D ;D just imagine what the 500 would do to a pdog, shoot the bullet weighs almost as much as the dog.

9x19, the best factory ammo for my 500 has been hornady 350 gr xtp/mag, yes it is a high, i  have a bubby loading for his 500 s&w pistol, he loads me some shooting rounds, i killed some deer with this rifle this season if you hit them they will go down,

We are of the same mind. I am sending my Handi off for a .204 and a 50 S&W. Keep posting and let us know how it they work.

I only had the time to shoot a couple of rounds of each loading... the 400 grain MagTech had marginally more recoil than the two 275 grain loads.

I plan to reload for this one... just have to get a set of RCBS dies... the Hornady 350 grain XTP is what I'll likely start with... along with some powder from Accuate Arms (I already have some #9 on hand and see it in their load data for the 350 Sierra). I got lucky on the factory loaded ammo, found it in a pawn shop under a thick layer of dust... got all three boxes (60 rounds total) for $65 out the door! The Hornady 350 factory loads were $59.99/20 at Gander Mountain... $3 per round!!!

why get the rcbs dies??  i got the lee carbide die set for 21.99 at midwayusa.com and they are working great so far.  just sized the first 100 cases tonight, and didnt have a single glitch.

josh',

I've been an RCBS guy for a long time, although my progressive presses are all Dillon!

I do use Lee's hand priming tool when running the single stage press though.
