Convince me guys.
« on: February 20, 2007, 03:34:50 PM »
I am getting ready to make a purchase on a quality varmint rig and my current favorite is the CZ brand of firearm. I currently shoot a NEF in 223 and 243 for coyotes, but want to step up to a higher quality firearm. I have my eyes on the Kevlar Varmint in 204 and the American standard in 204. Give me the advantages the Kevlar has over the American as far as a calling rifle goes. Any and all recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In the context of a calling-walking rifle about the only advantage the kevlar would have would be the more weather resistant stock.

The American will be lighter cost less and be more than accurate enough to put one right in a yotes brain pan at 200yds

for what you describe I would buy the American and put the money saved into better optics.

Check out the recent link below.Like I stated there you can drag it threw the woods and over fences etc. without worrying about the scratching it.I have a few laminated stocks/nice wood and it is always in the back of my mind about nicking it or something! Also I have never held the wood stocks but that Kevlar is nice ;D It has a nice palm swell ! It also shoots great ;)   Edd

Thanks sniper, I believe you just pushed me over the edge ;D I also worry about putting $500 in a wood stock and scratching it up while in the field. The Kevlar would be better for that reason. I can get the Kevlar for $675 out the door. The next thing is to decide whether to go with the 204 over the 223. Since I do not reload, YET, the 223 would be cheaper on the wallet. Being the 223 is a 1:9 twist it would stabilize the heavier grain rounds a lot better, and still not ruin the hides too terribly bad. But there is just something about the 204's 4000fps that excites me though :o How does the 204 do one coyotes as compared to the 223. I know my 243 puts them down, but with a lot of pelt damage.

Since you don't reload the .223 will be much cheaper to shoot and it will be easier finding a variety ammo for it. I own the CZ 223 and love it. I can't knock the 204 as I think it's a fun round but most likely either will do what you need to do. The Kevlar would be nice because you can get the 1-9 twist and have a stock that you won't have to worry about scratching.

All the calibers work ok.But as you get smaller shot placement becomes more important!I have a .243 that I sometimes use and have not had bad pelt damage from it.The load was a 75gr. V-Max over Varget.I shot one broadside at about 15yd. and no pelt damage not evan a exit hole ;D I have yet to have bad damage with that load.I would put the .204 and .223 close as far as putting yotes down.I have had a few run a little ways before going down with the .204 this yr. but that maybe more shot placement! The dogs were shot on the trot and I hit them just behind the rib cage.I have been using 40gr. Bergers@3950fps. I would like to give the 39/40 blitzkings/ V-maxs a try too ;)I did lose one yote this yr. with the .204 that I thought should have went down tho. I hit him straight on at 200yd. he went down hard and started flopping but got back up and took off :o. I trailed him for about 2hr. in the snow(on blood& tracks) but finally gave up :'(.I use the 204,223,22-250&the 243  and soon to try the 218 Bee from my new Taurus  ;D for my yote hunting. For you the 223 wold be a good start if you don't reload.

I would hope a .223 would be sufficient for varmints considering the US military uses it as a man killer.  :o

I have the CZ varmint Kevlar in 204, great gun can't say enough about it I switched from .223 to .204 but the .223 is a great varmint round as well, got this guy at 309yds

I have the CZ-527 laminate varmint HB, in .223. There is only one problem with the .223 in these CZ's and that is they only have 1-12 twist rate, so if you were considering hand loading you are pretty much limited to 50 gr bullets max'.
Anything heavier the 1-12 twist rate does not stabilize the bullets adequately.

It's a problem inherent to pretty much all .223's though, it's not exclusive to the Brno's by any means.

In spite of the issue with twist rate, I would buy the .223 over the .204 Ruger or .22-250 unless you already have a .223. BUT in that case then definitely get the .204 Ruger as well! Two guns = twice as much fun!

The .223 is the best all-around varmint caliber going.
