OT - Shooting Bench
« on: February 20, 2007, 08:48:26 AM »
In a past issue of a gun magazine I saw a photo of an varmint shooter using a product labled as "GunHorse".  It looked like a saw horse modified into a fold up shooters bench.

I did a Google search and located a brief mention of it in another magazines product guide, but no addtional information.  The magazine mentioned it was a product by Sportsline(?).  However, I couldn't locate anything about that company.

I also checked Midway and Sportsmans Guide and couldn't locate anything there, either.

Does anyone know of this product and/or could point me in the right direction?

Many thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for the fast reply, Quick.

I called the number and connected with a manufacturer of heavy duty plastic saw horses.  I spoke to a very poilte lady who said she was not familiar with the Gunhorse and suggested it may have been a discontinued product.  She refered me a a distibutor of their products:  LehighGroup.com.

If anyone has a Gunhorse or has used one, how did you like?

I am considering building something like it for portable varminting duties.

The lady said she believed many of their products are marketed through Sears under a different lable.

Thanks

Try Rifle Dock, that is a pretty nifty protable bench rest. O' ya I know it is quite expensive, but that is what quality is all about.

I use the Aero Aces bench, rock solid, a great shooting platform even on uneven ground due to the three leg design. If ya don't find the one you're looking for, this would be one to check out. I made mine with smaller 2'x3'x¾" cabinet grade plywood to save a bit of weight, bedded the oak wedges in bondo, and then bolted the flanges on with carriage bolts thru the top instead of wood screws from the bottom. total cost incl the $8 bondo was about $65, IIRC.

You can also get a set of brackets on ebay for about $37.

I made one something like yours with screw in pipe and flanges. Its ok but not too solid. It works well sitting in one place shooting gophers. Using a long bag with grain for a front rest so you have about 45deg lateral movement.

Mine works good enough for load work, if it's good for that, it'll work for fun stuff!!  :D The last trip out with it, I shot the same group sizes with the 25-06 and 35 Rem as I did on a concrete bench at the range, it don't get no better than that. ;)

Fred and Quick.  Thanks you very much for the info and suggestions.  I do appreciate them.

The examples you provided certainly cover the spectrum.

I'm kicking around idea's right now and don't yet know what I want to do.

I have a set of plastic saw horses from Sears, so i pulled one out and set it up with a scrap piece of plywood and my rest.  It could work, but I'm not sure how stable it would be. That developed into using a Black & Decker Workmate with a modified table attached.  It can be folded relatively flat, as the ones each of you use.

The wheels are turning.  :D

Again, thanks much for the replies

im glad quick posted that link to those flanges.  i think a guy could make a set of those pretty easy.  Was thinking about building the same bench as quicks, but was trying to think of a different way to mount the legs other than the wedges of wood.  I never even thought about something as easy as shown in that auction.  (i tend to over-engineer things sometimes)

It's built on the same platform as an ironing board only much stabler. It's certainly priced right and very portable, weighs about 65 lbs. Easy to handle though and sets up real quick. Digger, me, and his son-in-law all use the same kind. It really supports my big ole butt too.  ;D

Table is 32" high, legs were cut to 31" then threaded. I use a 5 gallon white bucket(the kind ya get from restaurants) upside down for a seat, put a throwable boat life preserver on it to sit on,  it's also handy to put stuff in to carry to the shooting position. I have a handle on the bottom of the table and carry the legs in a canvas bag, but I'd like to put the legs on the bottom of the table in some "broom" clips, table and legs weigh about 50lbs I think.

Like2hunt...That's a neat little bench you & Digger have...and the price is decent enough for a store bought one ;)
