.375 H&H and 375 Ultramag interchangable?
« on: February 20, 2007, 05:57:17 AM »
I was told by a gun store clerk today that a remington rifle chambered in 375 ultra mag can fire 375 H&H interchangeably.  Is this true or will the ultra mag not fire the H&H?
I am not afraid to make an example out of you

Well from what I see in the nosler manual the 375 h&h is a belted case and the 375 ultra mag is not , so I am quite sure this would be a recipie for disaster. Also with the cartridge dimensions it would be verry sloppy in the chamber and if fired could cause some major issues. I definately don't reccomend this to anyone!!

You should go back to the store and tell the owner to fire  the "clerk" who told you that!  About the only things that are the same between the two are bullet diameter and primer size.  As stated above, the .375H&H is a belted case, the UM is not but is bigger in diameter.  Headspace on the smaller case would be controlled by the extractor, if at all.   If you were able to fire an H&H cartridge in the UM chamber, it could burst and send a nice jet of white hot powder gas back at you - after it cracked the stock, etc.     :o

The clerk is surely in error. He may have been thinknng about using a 375H&H in a 375 WBY which can be done safely.

Maybe that is what he was thinking, but he needs to be corrected before someone chambers and fires the H&H in the ultramag gun and is possibly hurt...

Agreed with above, and if im not mistaken, wasnt the UM designed for slightly higher pressures than the HH?

Seriously, go back to that store and talk to his manager.

NO  these are not interchangable  the 375 Ultra Mag is unbelted and is longer . Also has 30 percent more powder capacity. I know this to be the fact as I own both calibers  in Remington model 700 both African Plains Rifles  as they are called from the factory.

I prefer the Ultra Mag in every situation.

Agreed with all above.   Go back to the store ASAP to correct the clerks mistake.
