cz 527 223 varmint which stock choice
« on: February 19, 2007, 02:00:53 PM »

Ok , I was looking at a cz 527 in 223. The wood stock in 223 varmint I can get for $550.00 total and the laminated stock in varmint 223,I can get for $600.00 total. The kelver 223,I can get for $686.00 total. I was leaning towards the laminated and Kelvar stocks. Question is,do they shoot that much better than the wood. I have a remington fluted 22-250 with a HS precision stock and it shoots very good. Do any of you have the cz 527 varmint in any of these stock configurations and how well do they shoot out the box with handloads.

I have the varmint in the Kevlar in .204 and couldn't be happier ;D Here is a pic. of a 5 shot group at 200 yd. the last shot was the flier and the pressure got to me :'( The target is 1/2 in. dot!! I like the Kevlar because I don't have to worry about scratching it in the field. It's black with a green swirl(lack of a better word)in it. The 2nd pic, is of a double shot with the gun 3 weeks ago :)

Thanks for info and pics. I like the 204 ruger too, and I still want one. I was just set up for the 223 since I have a Ar-15 and have been shooting it for a while.I do like the kelvar stocks and I am leaning towards that. I know once the rifle is purchased, the additional funds are soon forgotton...

I also have the cz 527 .204 vamint Kevlar, this stock is free floated and has aluminum bedding, in theory it should shoot better, plus it just looks way cool! shoots great with crappy HSM ammo here are a couple of 3 shot groups at 100 yds

dead squirrel at 309 yards

A word to the wise ain't necessary- it's the stupid ones who need the advice

There is a bigger issue than just the stock choice. The laminate version has a barrel with 1X12 twist. The Kevlar version comes with a 1X9 twist. Thus, if you intend to shoot any distance (perhaps 200 yards or greater) you want to go with the kevlar version. The problem is that the 1X12 twist really will only stablize a bullet between 40 and 50 gr. I know that there are people that say that 1X12 will stabilize a 69 gr bullet, but my experience from owning both rifles is that the 1X 12 will only marginally stabilize a 52 gr bullet. My groups with the 1X12 with a 40 gr bullet were outstanding in the .30 range. Going to the 52 gr and the groups opened up to around .75. When you move to the 1X9 twist, my rifle will shoot a Sierra 52 HPBT with 26.9 H335 with CCI BR4 primers to a three shot group of .280. That was impossible with the laminate stock version. The longer you shoot the more you have to consider the impact of crosswind. The lighter the bullet the more it will move. You would be surprised by the difference 20 gr can make. In some cases it can mean the difference between a good hit and a bad miss. Therefore, you need to decide what you want to do with the rifle. My recommendation is go with the kevlar version for more options. Spend it once and avoid my mistake. I could have spend an extra 150.00 to buy the kevlar version. But oh no, I was real smart and saved some cash in the short run only to spend an extra 350.00 in the final analysis. The faster twist will only hurt you with the real small bullets (less than 40 gr) and will only open up a greater range of bullets going to the faster twist (including the Berger 60 HPFP which I hear is oustanding). Give yourself options.  You can decide later if you want to shoot at distance or only in 100 yards or less. It cost me close to $350.00 to change my mind. Please give it some thought.  :)

I was about to special order the laminate stock version of the 527 Varmint, but my local dealer checked with CZ and said that this model is on backorder for at least three months :(
