What type of barrel for scope?
« on: February 19, 2007, 12:21:08 PM »
I've decided to buy an Encore and I'm wondering what type of barrel is best for mounting a scope, ribbed or non-ribbed?  Also, how do the TC scope mounts measure up to the TSOB system and how does the TC scope compare to the Leupold?

I olnly have experience with the TC  'scopes, I have 2, and I don't like them, the field of view is terrible, (to me), But in all fairness, these are the only  (2/2x7) 'scopes I've had any experience with.

Oistol scopes in general have small fields of view.  The TCs are average, and the only scope I own that is better is a Burris.  I can't speak for Leupold pistol scopes.

It takes some practice to get used to the small fov of a pistol scope.  When you are used to it they work pretty well.

Dusty ,if you can afford them go with Leupold. If $ is scarce, get the Burris. I don't think the ribbed barrels are easily scoped. most of the ones I see and use are the bull barrels. The T/c mounts are the vw's and the TSOB'S are the Cadillacs. Depending on the recoil of the barrel cartridge you get ,you might not need to go with the expensive TSOB mount.

The T/C scopes are inferior to the Leupold, Bushnell 3200 2-6X, and Burris scopes, in my opinion.
The T'SOB base, with it's 6 screws is very strong and the preferred base on heavy recoiling Contenders. On Encores, 4 screw bases appear to be quite satisfactory, at least up through .308 Win. class cartridges. I don't know what you mean by " ribbed barrels ", with respect to an Encore. There's no such thing from the factory. Do you mean a barrel with an aftermarket full length vent rib, like offered by SSK ? If so, there's really no strength advantage to them, versus the standard T'SOB.
