Enjoyed the pic.  Needs a description of the hunt.  Tough looking place to get 'em out of.  Don't keep us waiting too long...

Ok, here is the hunt.

I am hunting public land near home- archery only. Steep wooded hills in northern ca. on a lake. I use my boat to get to most of the best hunting spots, so everything i shoot is pretty much down hill to the lake. Can be pretty darn rugged though. This particular morning it had rained most the night, so fresh tracks meant a hog in front of you. I was easing up on a known bedding knoll(been hunting this area for years) with the wind right, and fresh boar tracks under foot, when i spotted this hog sleeping at the base of a madrone tree. I slowly crept in one very slow step at a time till i got the right angle on the vitals. This put me about 15 yards from the hog, and he was still fast asleep. I drew my bow, and picked a spot on his chest and let fly. The hit was a little low, but the hog jumped up, spun around looking for me, then went into cardiac arrest. Hog down 15 yards away! He never did get up- the shot was right through the heart- although i must say i wasnt acually aiming for the heart.

My buddy and me packed him out on our backs in two pieces, straight down a steep ravine to the lake. That was about 20 minutes of hell! I have shot a lot of hogs in this area, and this one is the biggest. I would guess he went #350 or better. Let me know if your in the area- maybe i can guide you on a bow hunt here- its awesome country! I will try to post a couple more pictures tonight.

All the best, Tad ;D

Good looking rugged country.  Nice effect that rainbow.  I spent two years in Long Beach (for Uncle Sam) and never knew you had it so good in the north.  Looks a little like Vandenberg.  Great story too.  Can't say I have ever found one asleep.  However, I too like getting to within 10's of feet.  They make one heck of a racket when foraging for food.  Sometimes, if they aren't all that big or I don't need the meat, I don't even shoot.  Gives them something to think about if they have that capacity in their little golf ball sized brains.  Pig hunting is a good primer for Fall Deer season.  If you can use the meat, you can never kill enough pigs.  Thanks for posting.

Tad Houston.

Great story and pictures, Nice hunting country also. Like Land_Owner I spent some time in Long Beach with our Uncle Sam But, Never had the time to wander around the hills much, Wish i had spent more time in the hills and less time doing what was required of me. Thanks for the pictures, They were great.......Joe........
