OK Gurus
« on: February 19, 2007, 07:50:19 AM »
I have a little NEF Ultra Handi in .243 that I load down for my granddaughter. I would like to work up some loads for me to use on coyotes. What is the Max psi for this little beauty?  Also, what about range?

Thanks,

Dave  8)

Just use prudent handloading procedures as normal. I would recommend choosing a powder that has good velocity but with lower pressures, Handi's tend to stick brass and fail to eject if you approach max loads, particularly in the .243, a predictable result of frame flex with higher pressures, kind of a built in failsafe!! If you have the superlight, keep the barrel cool, it will heat up fast, groups tend to get big. I'm sure you'll get some load recommendations for it from those that handload for it, I've had real good results with Federal 95gr Fusion and 100gr Power-shoks.

Thanks Quick,

This little rifle is sure different from my .444's  ;D I just wanted to make sure what the SAAMI Max pressure is before I begin to load up. Rest assured I do not plan to come near to 60,000 psi.

Tnx again,

The SAAMI spec is 52,000 cup, just like the parent cartridge .308 Win.

I use 18.0 gr of Blue Dot with a 100 gr Rem Core-Lokt that will shoot less than 1" at 100 yards.  That should be sufficient for deer or coyotes out to 200 yards.  It's easy on you and the gun, but still developes 2200 fps.   ;)

Tim,

I was quoting Speer #13, which is getting kinda dated, but they were both the same at that time.  I see no rational reason for there to be a differnce in the two, but rational is something no one has ever accused SAAMI of being.  ;D

It's just the piezo measuring device is a little more accurate and differentiates tween the two different bore sizes, what was 52kcup for both is now a bit more for the 308 in psi. ;)

Note that these specification may differ from previous ones because, unless specified otherwise, they are now based on Piezo transducer PSI measurements and not copper crusher (CUP) measurements.  Piezo measurements tend to read slightly higher than copper crusher measurements as they more accurately read pressure peaks.  The standards are set in the following SAAMI publications.  Not all specifications have been changed to piezo measurement.
