22 Hornet barrel type.

Question. Are there different barrel types available or are they all sporter type with open sights?

There are only 2 contours on the Hornet, 20" superlight with or without sights and 22" standard contour with sights, no bull barrel unless your name is Shaner!! :D

What is the difference between the two? Diameter?
Is there an accuracy advantage between the two?

Superlight barrels are very slim contour from just in front of the chamber swell to the muzzle with very little taper, standard contour would be best described as a heavy sporter. Muzzle diameter of the superlight is around .600", standard is anywhere from .625" to .675". The Hornet superlight is the most popular of the superlights for accuracy since it heats up very little, the .243 the least since it develops the most barrel heat, the .223 somewhere in between. You'll see more difference in cost due to the stock material than barrel.

Thanks Quick. A local gun shop has one for $205. I didn't know the difference so I thought I would ask knowing all the answers are here. It sounds like a fun gun to shoot.

On the 22" heavy spoter the iron sights are Williams  :o  Which I consider pretty darn good.  I scope mine but, just like having the iron sights on the Hornet from both a traditional pov and for when I want to be a bit more sporting shooting woodchucks the old fasion way  ;)  You may get a little more velocity out of the 22" barrel also.

Note:  Iron sighted Hornets do not come with a scope rail nor a spur.

Just a note for everyone, H&R has said they're switching to their proprietary sights, so don't be surprised if you don't get Williams sights, it's hard telling what's out there, mine has their old style sights on it.

If anyone want both, order the barrel with sights and have them add the scope rail and extension, lots cheaper than doing it the other way round, they'll add $47 for sights on a scoped barrel, but only $18 for a rail & ext on an iron sighted barrel. ;)

I stuck the barrel of a Nylon 66 out the front door the other day and shot at a crow in the front yard about 35 yards away and missed!  I don't use iron sights on anything anymore, just because of things like that.   ;)

My 20" SL still has some kind of iron sights on it, but it also has a 4-12X on it.  ;D
