Contender Hard to Open

HELP!!! I have a stainless TC frame that I shoot .22, .223, 7-30 waters and 309 JDJ barrels with.  All barrels previously mentioned are 12 to 16 inches and work perfectly on opening and closing action.   BUT I have a 21" stainless barrel in .223 that is almost impossible to open!  What is my problem with this one barrel?  You have to be part gorilla to get the action to open.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated as turkey season is approaching.

sounds like you have a problem with the locking lugs. I have never seen a ss barrel with out split lugs,but look anyway, someone might have changed them. anyway you'll probably need to change them. Good Luck

You can check to see if its the locking lug very quickly by exchanging lugs with one of your other barrels that opens easy.  You need a small roll pin punch to knock out the pin, then push the end of the lug against something solid ( I use the edge of my work bench ), pull the punch out and slowly release pressure.  Reverse proceedure for installation.  If that cures problem you may need to polish upper side of lug slightly.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  ;D

I find it easier to polish the bottom of the lugs.  This way you do not change the shape of the locking surfaces.  It has worked for me for 30 years.

Since I'm relatively new to TC's..........what is the best method for polishing the lugs?

I use a fine hand stone.  I am always afraid I will remove to much.  I stone 15-20 strokes then put it back together and try it.  If it fires you must be pretty close, so take off a little then try.  I don't have enough confidence in my ability to use my Dremel, but I suppose you could do that if you are careful.  Worst case would be you take to much off and have to get a new set from TC.

OK, I'm only a little  :-[ :-[ :-[....Actually I,ve got the barrel upside down when I take the lugs out, so I,m really working on the bottom too.  Thanks for the help Lone Star. This senile old man needs all the help he can get.  We are NOT removing any material or changing the shape of anything...we're POLISHING.  I use my dremel tool, but...ONLY with a cloth polishing wheel and a small amount of jewelers rouge(polishing compound).  BTW, this same procedure will often cure a misfire problem that is caused by poor lock up.
