cz varmint 17 cal.
« on: February 17, 2007, 10:30:39 AM »
Got my son one for Christmas, we are not happy with the way it shoots. Tried several different types of ammo. It may put three in one small hole and through two out. It does this with all ammo we have tried. Thes flyers are out about one half inch, sometimes a little more than that. Any suggestions. We have tried three different scopes, same results.

Thanks

A half inch ??? Those aren't called fliers. That's called a GREAT group.

If I had a rifle that regularly put 5 shots within 1/2" of each other the last thing I would be thinkin about would be monkeying with it.

Krochus, the fliyers are not with in a half inch. they are half inch or more away from the group. This blows out the group size, this may not be to bad, but I would like get the flyers at least down to where my groups would be half or better. Thanks for your response.

SELL ME THE GUN AND BUY A DIFFRENT ONE LIKE A COOPER , LOL.   OR TWO OTHER THINGS  STOP FLINCHING ITS JUST A .17HMR.         ON A SERIOUS NOTE TRY THIS OUT.  BUY ABOUT 12 BOXES OF AMMO, WEIGHT THEM AND PUT THEM IN GROUPS.  THEN USE A RIM THICKNESS GUAGE ON THEM.  THIS WILL GIVE YOU UNIFORMANITY IN YOUR AMMO.  BUT IF YOU DO WANT TO SELL LET ME KNOW    riz78@AOL.COM

If it is the 17 centerfire  you better keep that jewel because CZ will not be making anymore from what I hear. You have a valuable rifle on your hands.

He still hasn't gotten back to us on which cartridge it's chambered for? Or on how big these groups he isn't happy with are?

Sorry guys, its a HMR. Most talk I hear about these days is about the 17HMR, guess I forgot bout the centerfire. MY MISTAKE... :-[ Group sizes vary. one group had 3 shots in a .200" hole and the other 2 a mear .600" away! blew that group... every group so far has its share of flyers, some up too 3/4 inch. These are at 50 yards, havent shot 100 yards yet. Got other cz,s that shoot very well after a little stock work "bedding action and free floating barrell and trigger work". My shooting buddy thinks I'm expecting to much from a factory gun. He may be right, but I aint give up yet. This project has been put back for now, working on a Rem 660 in 243 cal. Will do more with the hmr later this year I hope. Preban, the recoil of this 17 hmr is tough to handle ,.. ;D Have been cut above the eye a couple times.... with my 7mm mag so you may be right, that thought of bleeding above the eye may be sneaking up and biting me. Thanks to all of you and Graybeard, this is a great fourm.

I am not sure how familar or how long it has been since you did much rimfire shooting?  Take a look at the wind drift on a 17hmr.  It may be less than any other rimfire but it's still a rimfire.

My CZ 453 American 17hmr / Burris 4.5-14 / caldwell bags no rest.  Averages 1" 5 shot groups at 100 in low wind, warm weather.  Best groups are in the .5's (rare but happen).  Best groups at 50 are in the .2's & .3's (little more common less wind drift)

The groups go all to hell if there is any wind............just like any other rimfire and even my 22 Hornet.

Could be wrong but sounds like wind to me.  Last not sure why but they seem to come in after a couple hundred rounds, could be just getting use to the gun?

I shoot 17hmr's pretty avidly.  The CZ's are at least as good as anything else out there and better than most in that caliber imo

Good luck
