.44 629 question
« on: February 16, 2007, 01:20:25 PM »
I have a Ruger SRH with a 7.5 barrel in .44 mag.  I'm thinking about adding a 629 (probably with the 8 3/8 barrel).
I know in the past there has been a lot of talk of the Smith's not being very strong.  I currently shoot 240's at 1500 f/s.  So, are the newer Smith's up to the challenge (strong material, etc.)?  I'd like your input.  Thanks.

You may never shoot your RSH again if you buy a S&W!
I have a Ruger in 454 and another in 44 mag. I enjoy both and find them to shoot better than I do.
I believe the S&W will shoot every bit as good and handel better than the Ruger

I too was skeptical til a 629 fell in my lap...first time out, indoors , first I couldn't believe the trigger single action, then I poured 10 shots in the same whole at 20 yrds with 240gr Winch. white box....I can't wait to get outside with it...I opened a forum on which 44 mag in the hand gun section. Most everybody liked the 629.....now I know why.   ;D ;D ;D ;D  buy one! You won't regret it!

My first handgun was a Ruger Redhawk, all the 44's I've had since are S&W's. I wouldn't suggest loading up past what the various loading manuals suggest but the new S&W is a reasonably strong gun and very accurate with a great single action trigger pull. Double action isn't bad either.

Ok, thanks for the responses.  Does the Smith absorb recoil as well as the Ruger.  I like the grip of the Ruger (rubber), but the Smith has metal showing on the back of the grip where your palm goes.

I haven't shot a Ruger enought to say...I can tell you that the first time out with my 629, I shot 100 rounds, all factory 180s and 240s. I probably would have shot 100 more but thought I should clean it first...and let somebody else have my lane....it's a hoot ta shoot!  ;D  I sure didn't notice the frame thats exposed in the grip...but I shoot indoors every week.

Thanks, Ken2222.  I think you have a scope on your Smith, right?  I know that adding weight to it like that will greatly decrease felt recoil.  I had a scope on my Ruger once.

Yup, scoped with a little Burris....I am thinking of a SRH that I might load a little warmer but only because the SRH is comming in a trade...and my son will likely shoot that...in competion with me , of course!   ;D ;D Some day he might even outshoot the Ole Man..... :o :o :o :o  maybe....I'm buying a BH in .41 Mag right now too...just because... ;D

Try to find a 629 Classic, with the full underlugged barrel.
