Man, that XCR is a SWEET SWEET rifle. If I got one, I wouldn't have to worry about losing it, I'd never lay it down. Hope I never see one in a store, it's likely that 3 or 4 of them would come home with me. Then it would be "Look honey, I adopted quadruplets!!!"

Yep, I downloaded the catalog. If you have a Cabela's, Bass Pro, or a Gander Mtn. close to you, they probably have the hard copy of the catalog to look at.

The 7mm/08 is my all time favorite caliber, Ive got a MKV Weatherby with a 20 inch tube that has never failed me, in the Louisiana piney woods. Ive already boiught my 3 year old grandson a handi rifle in 7/08 for when he's ready and recently bought one of the new Ruger Hawkeys in 7mm/08. I cant tell you nothing bad about the 06 its been around forever and I have taken a few deer with one and everyone I did shoot with it was 100% doa. I do agree with everyone that the 7/08 is IMHO just about as close to perfect as you can get in a deer sized animal rifle,

You got to love the 7mm-08!!! I sure do!!!! I know this is the "Bolt Action" forum, but since you're talking West VA hunting, which I assume includes a lot of "Woods hunting", I thought I'd throw out another rifle option for your consideration.

Check out the Special Run Remington 7600 7mm-08 pumps available from Grices. http://www.gricewholesale.com/specials_7600.php I have had a Rem 700 Mtn LSS 7mm-08 for a couple of seasons now, and love it, but I recently picked up one of the 7600 7mm-08's, with it's quick follow up shot capability, specifically for woods hunting. It consistently shoots sub MOA groups with the first "woods" load I've developed for it, a 154 Grn Hdy Round Nose at a little over 2,700 FPS. (That'll put em in the dirt !!!....LOL) I got the pump after this years rifle season was already over, so I will have to wait till next season to deer hunt with it.

Best Group To Date:
(Dark squares=1/2"..Light squares=1/4")

As others have said, even though the 7mm-08 can handle larger game, it may very well be the "perfect deer cartridge". I think the 7600 pump in 7mm-08 will become by "My" perfect deer rifle.

I bet that 154 gr. Hornady load will lay them on the ground like the Hammer of Thor

I've yet to use those heavier loads in the 7/08, mainly was staying w/ 140 gr. because I'd been hunting some fields as well as the woods w/ my mod. 7 and wanted a bit flatter trajectory. But now that I've picked up a Tikka in 7/08 as well, I'm going to use that for my mid range field rifle and set the mod. 7 up for a dedicated short range woods rifle and might just work up some of those 154 gr. Hornady loads. I've heard of several folks using that bullet in the 7/08 and they all swear by it.

Best of luck with your new rifle, she's a keeper for sure.

Look's about like a "perfect" deer rifle to me too

YankeeBill, I have a .280 that I love. I am also shooting 140 grain because I too hunt a mix of field and woods. A friend of mine has a 7 Mag that he reloads for. He gave me about 10 Scirroco 150 grain bullets. I haven't tried them yet, but they have a very high ballistic coefficient comparable to the 140's. They are a little pricy, $45 for 100, but you get a little bit heavier bullet that will shoot like a 140 grain. Like I said, I haven't even tried them yet, and I usually buy the Sierra Gamekings for $17 for 100 because they are cheaper. Just my $.02

Since moving to WV, I've given the 154gr Hornady RN a try in my 7-08 and 7x57. For whitetails at moderate ranges, that is one awsome bullet.

That .280 is a very nice, versetile round as well. Don't have anything in that chambering myself yet, but have considered it a time or two. Folk's I know that use it really like caliber.

A month or two back I picked 500 of Nosler's old 140 gr. solid bases. If you're not familiar with them they were the predacessor (sp) to their B/T bullet. They have since been discontinued, but every once in a while Nosler will offer a limited run of them, available directly thru their website. I pd. $ 6.96 per 50 ct. which I thought was a great deal.

I haven't used them yet but from reading what others have said that used to use them, they are supposed to be super performers at all practical ranges. I'm going to try them next season for my med.- long range work.

I think the 270 you now have is about perfect. Nothing wrong with 30-06, 308, 7 mag, 280, 7mm-08, 270 etc. I've own them all. The deer do not know the difference. Pick a gun that carries well and groups well. I put confidence and comfort at the top of my list. Caliber (among these listed) doesn't matter at all.

Buy one of each and you'll soon agree. I suggest it highly.

You already have the greatest white tail round on the planet. If you have to trade do so for an upgraded rifle in .270. Say a CZ American. The 7-08 is a ballistic twin to the 7X57 Mauser. I have not shot a 7-08 but have killed a bunch of WVA white tails with the 7X57. Think of it as a .270 Lite. You will probably discover that the Rem. Mod.7 is heavier than the Rem. mountain rifle ....if weight is a concern.

I can personally attest to the fact that Speer 130gr. FB or BT loaded to 2800fps in a 7X57 have contributed to the decline in white tail numbers in western West-buh-Gawed.

Maybe this will help. I have a 30-06 shooting 165PTand BTs at 2800fps and a 7x57 150 PTs and BTs at 2700fps (7-08 speeds). Both almost identical FN commercial 98s. The biggest animals I've killed with both are legitimate weighed 300lb pigs and a 275lb red hind(similar to a smallish elk cow) with the 7. I can't discern any difference in the effectiveness at ranges under 300yds and animals this size. I rarely shoot my '06 any more due to the heavier kick, and the extra power, actual or percieved is not needed. I believe the 7x57 and 7-08 are the best deer cartridges ever. capt dp

Well, last Saturday didn't work out very well for me and my planned gun shop trip. I was suppose to have a three day weekend and ended up getting called out to work. Life of a railroader, I guess. I am hoping for a better outcome this weekend, so maybe I can get a chance to get to the shop and look. I'll keep posted on what I decide to do if I get the chance to go. Thank you guys for the info. several years ago I bought a rem 700 mtn rifle in a 30-06. big mistake. Although quite accurate, after shooting 10 rounds at the range I thought my shoulder was broken and my teeth would fall out. Bought the rem 700 sps in a 7-08. Accuracy is great and the deer don't seem to know the difference when they're shot.

I must say, I've never seen a pump rifle shoot that accuately. I'm not a pump rifle guy, but I wouldn't let that rifle go for anything.

Thanks for all the compliments on the 7600!! The target shown was shot on my first trip to the range with that rifle and was the best group of the day; even so, the overall average group size for the day was just a hair over 3/4" with largest group at about 1 1/4". The variation no doubt was due the the 7 1/4 Lb factory trigger I was having to deal with. I was really having to concentrate and focus to get those kind of groups. The 7600 comes with a free floated barrel, which I'm sure contributes greatly to its accuracy. In my opinion, the trigger is the only downside to a Rem 7600.

I took it to my local gunsmith, Rick, who just happens to do excellent trigger work. (PM me for contact info) I just got it back a couple of weeks ago and it is now at a clean smooth 3 1/4 Lbs. I wouldn't want a "hunting" rifle to be much lighter than that anyway. I haven't had a chance to take it out and shoot it since I got it back, but at a minimum I would expect the groups to be a bit more consistant in size.

As far as the 7mm 154 Grn Hdy Round Nose bullets are concerned, I must say that I have been extremely impressed with their accuracy. I first tried them in my Rem 700 Mtn LSS 7mm-08 and they consistently shoot 3/4" or less @ 100 YDs. Here are a couple of targets shot with the Mtn LSS

I use 3-9x50 Burris Ballistic Plex scopes on both rifles and tune the loads to match the ballistic plex aim points. Sighted in dead on @ 150 yds, the 154 Grn Hdy RN (2,736 MV) is dead on at 300 Yds using the 300 yd aim point. I haven't had the opportunity to take anything with the RN yet but everyone I've heard from that uses them says they are extremely effective and it will definitely be my "woods" load for the 7600.

The Mtn LSS will be my "open fields" rig, shooting 145 Grn Speer HotCor's @ 2,800 fps. I have also found this bullet to be extremely accurate and effective as well. Using this load in conjunction with the Burris ballistic plex reticle, I'm within an inch of aim point out to 400 Yds. and still running at 2,053 FPS & 1,356 FtLbs. Here is a 200 Yd target shot with the LSS & 145 Grn Speers.
