scope mounting - hammer troubles

Well, I maybe "f"ed up - got the new .223 Bull Barrel Handi this week, and intended to install the new Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 I just bought. After reading the various posts, I went with the medium Burris Zee rings to try to get as low a mounting position as possible - realizing I might have hammer clearence issues. When I got the scope mounted with the eye relief about where it ought to be, the hammer did not clear the zoom ring by at least 1/4 inch. Did a little grinding to "bob" the hammer a bit, installed the hammer extension gizmo and all seemed well, the scope mounted OK, the hammer cleared OK, but then I noticed the extension was sometimes hitting the break-open lever and getting hung up on that - so now I have a new problem. Do I order a new hammer, trade the rings on "high" models and start over? Suggestions anyone?

 When I mounted the scope on my Ultra, I used Millett angle-loc LOW rings, and knew that I was going to have to make a few modifications. Like you, I ground part of the hammer off, also made a few changes in the hammer spur, so that I could get it lower on the hammer. Which gave me clearence for the hammer but the hammer spur did hit the barrel release. I cut the back of the barrel release button off with a Dremel tool, I cut off about an 1/8 inch and while I was at it, also knurled the button so that it is non-slip now

  I found the whole project to be fairly easy, of coruse, I did take a few shortcuts. I did'nt remove any parts from the reciever, I just duct-taped all but the parts I was working on, kept all of the metal dust and shavings out of the reciever. Mc makes a good point, since the .223 has no recoil to worry about, a little trimming on the top front of the scope rail, move the scope back ΒΌ" or less and you'll have it made.

You could flip the hammer extension over so it sticks out on the left side of the hammer; it will go on either way....
