Wolf steel case 223
« on: February 08, 2007, 04:06:42 PM »
Has anyone tried Wolf steel case 223 in a bolt action.  I have used the 7.62 x39  in my SKS but never tried anything else.  The price is good.

I've shot a rather large quantity of steel cased 7.62x39 in my CZ527 carbibne. My buddy has probably shot close to the same amount of steel cased 223 in his CZ527 FS. No issues whatsoever accuracy was on par with every other brand of bargian priced domestic ammo.

I used them in a Howa 1500 Varmit rifle with a heavy barrel. Got a good price on 50 of them. Took them out to Bonita Canyon in the Zuni Mountains in New Mexico. I got on paper at 100 yards and decided to see how the cartridge would group. It patterned pretty well, but was lousy at grouping. I swear it was a six inch five shot group at best. I ended up just shooting them to hear the bang because they were not accurate enough in the rifle to do anything else. That is the only experience I have had with them. In fact, in the past 12 years that is the only factory loaded cartridge I have fired in any rifle I owned. Tom P

I got so-so groups of 1.5-2" at a hundred yards out of my 12FV which is what I got with other promo type loads. Otherwise, my rifle cuts cloverleafs so I stick to my home rolled ammo. Would not hurt for you to try the Wolf ammo if you want to as a box of 20 is still fairly cheap.

It seems like it will fit the bill as a killer of milk jugs from 100 to 200 yds.  I will use better stuff for more precise target work or hunting.
