Coyote/Deer Gun
« on: February 07, 2007, 03:33:07 AM »
I am a avid deer hunter and have also wanted to start hunting them with a pistol. I am also a avid predator hunter but i dont want to ruin the pelt with my gun. So i need a combo deer/predator gun that will effieciently kill a deer, but not ruin a coyotes/bobcat pelt. I thought about the .204 but that is not enought killing power (dont take me wrong, i have heard people killing deer with them) and is pretty harmful to a pelt. Thanks!

I am not a big coyote hunter but my hunting buddy is.
The ideal is probably two different barrels as pelt hunting is usually limited to 22 and below in caliber.
My understanding when pelt hunting is that you don't want the bullet to exit but all of the energy being left in the animal=Bang Flop or close to it.  End result one small hole with entry and no exit.  I doubt if you will find a cartridge that does that with relaibility that will also reliably work on deer.
Give my hunting buddy (Steve H. or sscoyote) a shout and see what he says:

I have been searching for such a Cartridge / Caliber for years. Like Ernie says it probably aint gonan happen with ONE BARREL / ONE CARTRIDGE, and anything that would work well for one animal would be a compamise for the other.

With that said the closest I have came is with the 6mm T/CU in a Contender, and no it wasn't perfect. I used 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips for Varmints & Coyotes at 3000 FPS. For Varmints this bullet was excellent and super explosive. I shot 2 Coyotes one morning at the same stand with this Gun-n-Load. The first I hit a little too low and too far back and it really messed things up (my fault not the gun not cartridge nor bullet's fault). As the first Coyote was yipping it brought back the 2nd Coyote. When my barking finally stopped the 2nd Coyote I was ready and put the 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip where it needed to go, right behind the shoulder. There was a tiny entrance hole but no exit hole. The distance was about 200 yards. I then turned my attention to the wounded Coyote that was just standing out about 100 yards all hunched up. This time I hit where I was supposed to and like the other Coyote there was a tiny entrance but no exit from this last shot and the Coyote dropped in it's tracks.

For Whitetail Deer I have always used the 80gr. Speer Hot Core Spitzer in the 6mm T/CU. This bullet is a little tough for the velocities possible with this cartridge when fired in a Handgun, but every single Whitetail I have ever shot with it resulted in a one shot kill (even when I had to penetrate bone). I have always been able to get good accuracy out of this bullet as well, and have shot Whitetails at distances greater than I should have with this bullet and carttridge with good results.

On a different note I used the 80gr. Speer Hot Core Spitzer in a 15" T/C Encore chambered in .243 Winchester this past season. I took 2 Whitetail Does New Years Day with this bullet and cartridge. One was a one shot kill with perfect bullet performance at 200 yards. The other one I messed up the shot, hit too far back and had to use a second shot to finish off the Deer.

Yes I am a fan of 6mm Cartridges. I have also had good luck with 6mm Cartridges over the years. However they are not for everyone and require extra care in choosing the right bullet and shot placement.

Good luck

Larry

+ one on the big 6mm fan

My 6mm30-30 AI will cover the deer/coyote thing but for deer size game the operator better be fully aware of what he is working with. Marginal for our big CO mule deer but perfect for coyotes with the right bullet selection.
for deer I like a Barnes 85 gr. TSX
for coyotes Hornady 58 gr. Vmax

What the heck you need two barrels. .204/.223 for coyotes and 7-30 Waters/30-30 for deer.........problem solved.

I would think the 6.8 SPC would fill that role..use 110-130 grainers for deer and the 90 HP's for the coyotes..I have fired the 90 grain HPs into water filled detergent bottles..the bottles liiterally blow up..the only thing left of the bullets is rubble and lead dust!!

I just got a a 6.8 spc barrel and think it will work great as a coyote/deer gun.
The sierra 110gr prohunter seems like it would be good if you wanted one load to do it all.

What's nice about the TC is you can have one receiver and multiple barrels.  Using one barrel for both, I think, wouldn't be practical.  I would use a .223 for the coyote and a .30-30 or .44 for th deer.

Then again, this is OMHO.    ;)

welp when i made that choice i had a 243 an it was the best :) mind you i wasent in it for the pelts lol thank god cause i had a softball exit wound from the 55 BT's lol i then actualy went up to a 95 Bt an it was the best it basicly went right in an out the other end...but if i was going for pelt...

17 remington or even the new 17/221 fireball.. get one in a nice 16 inch heavy contender or encore barrel..toss one of them sweet 17 bsa scopes on ther an a little tweeking of the bullet drop an you might be in good bussness...i keep thinking of that my self an just get a larger round for deer..
heck i got a 10 inch oct 30-30 barrel been thinken of trading or selling if your interesed toss me a pm

I use a 243 with Barnes bullets. The bullet expands in the deer size game very well but zip through the smaller coyotes with not much expansion at all.  If you want one gun and one load that is the way to go. JMHO. It works for me.  ;)

i HATE to tell a guy to use 1 gun when 2 or MORE will do a better job. How about a 12 gauge shotgun? Sliugs for deer and shot for coyotes !! A fairly tough bullet in 6mm or 7mm could work for this, but a 223 barrel AND a 7-30 waters barrel MIGHT work better.
Over on Specialty Pistols forums I saw a DOUBLE BARRELED T/C. The top bore was 22RF and the bottom was a CF round. With this you could have it all. If the RF is a 22MAG and the other is a 7mm or 30 cal ,think of the possibillities!!
