686 Performance Center?
« on: February 05, 2007, 04:47:50 PM »
I've been looking at getting my first pistol and have decided that I'd like a .357 so I could practice with the .38's.  I recently came across a 686 performance center .357 with a 3" barrel for $599.  Any idea if this is a good price?  It seems to fit my hand perfectly and while it is heavier, it feels much better than the taurus tracker I was looking at.

Thanks!

Don't have a mental picture of that specific model but six bills for a PC gun is not unreasonable if it's in excellent shape.  Also, three inch barrels are somewhat sought after by Smith afficianados.

The serial # FCP0605 and has a 1 piece 3" ported barrel.  Comes with a hard case and 2 additional sets of grips (wood and competition).  It appears to be in great shape....

The price is OK, but I will say the shorter the barrel, the harder it will be to shoot well.  The reduced sight radius makes even a slight error in aim a big deal.  It's not that they are necessarily any less accurate, just much harder to shoot well.

I'd snatch it up in a big hurry. One of my favorite .357s of all time is the 2.5" 686. It is so well balanced, it's like pointing your finger. A 3" would be even better because of the longer ejector rod.

I have never found them hard to shoot. I'm just an average shooter, and back in the good old days when I had to qualify every year, I never shot under 100 with a 2.5" S&W Model 19. Like the short barrel 686, it pointed really nice.

Getting a .357 for your first gun is a great choice.

It seems to me that if you can buy a Smith PC for $600, that's a good find. PC guns are the finest production handguns out there.  But then, I'm kind of partial to Smith's.

+1 or 2 or 3.  I would definitely buy a PC pistol for $600.  I have one, and I would not consider selling mine for that.  Tom.

My PC 25-10 cost $899. Tis a really fine shooter, but at that price, it outa be! I've seen the .357 you're talking about. Life is short and uncertain. Go for it.
