.300 Whisper
« on: February 04, 2007, 02:11:05 PM »
I'm thinking about getting a .300 Whisper, and was wondering if anyone here has one.  If so, how does it shoot out of a 14" barrel?  How's the muzzle blast?  Thanks In Advance.  Joe

I had a 10" SSK barrel and it was very accurate.  I used it to take one deer and was not impressed.  It killed the deer but a no blood trail tracking job for 200 yds is not my idea of fun.  (And it was a perfect just behind the shoulder shot too!)

My experience is about the same as Gregory’s except my tracking only lasted for about 50 yards.

My wife and I both hunt whitetail deer in Texas with the 300 Whisper. We love that little round. We are using 150 gr spire points ahead of a full load of H-110.  I don't have a chrony so I am guessing speed at 1900-2000 fps. The last 2 seasons we have harvested 8 deer at ranges from 40 - 125 yards. All but 1 were through and through in the lungs. The other was a quartering shot in the back of the shoulder and lodged under the skin of the off flank. True there was not usually a big blood trail, but none went more than 50 or so yards. We hunt in some very thick brush and have been satisfied with finding the deer in short order. The wife shoots a contender carbine with a 16 1/2" Fox Ridge barrel and I use a Savage Mdl 11 with a 16 1/2" bull barrel from Savage Shooter Supply. I also have a SSK 10" SS barrel and a AR15 upper in 300 Whisper. I don't believe I would attempt shots over 150 yd with this round. I am planning on a 7-30 Waters carbine in the near future for a little more range in more open areas like the Texas Hill Country.

A guy at the range let me shoot 3 rounds thru his. It was not very loud compared to my 30-30. he was using corbon factory ammo. With a 4x leupold scope and sandbags I put all three into an inch easily. From his stories and yours,I'd go with the 7TC/U. I'd also think seriously about 130 to 145 grain cast bullets. Some of the areas I hunt are TOO crowded fro a 200 yard tracking job. 50 yards could mean the deer is in some one else's freezer!

I am lucky to have some really good areas to hunt around here. Most of the hunting leases usually have about 100 acres per member. I have access to two large national forests  within 15 miles of home. I live in the country and have a 100 yard range behind the house. The hardest part about doing some shooting is having to tie my old horse up so she won't get in the line of fire. I just recently found these forums  and have enjoyed all the reading. I see I have about 145 pages to go through. It is a good thing I am retired. Well at least from a full time job.

I have a 14" Fox Ridge Barrel.  I have never shot a deer with it, but mine is very accurate with 125 BT's and I can't imagine a deer going far after one of those pills rips through his lungs..

My deer was shot with a 125 gr. Nosler BT at right at 2000 fps cronographed.
Like I said mine only went about 50 yards and everything was fine, but if it had made it farther it could have been interesting with the lack of blood trail.
I know one deer is not a good test and I am not saying I would not try the whisper again. I would like a better blood trail though.

BTW, the shot on my one deer was at about 20 yards and went through the ribs got both lungs ripped open the top of the heart. The internal damage was fine but the bullet hole going out was about the same as the one going in.

Guys, Thank You for your responses.  I spoke with the folks at Corbon earlier this week, they told me that the .300 Whisper is pretty much a "handload only" round right now due to the "war" and their supplier only making .223 rounds on their machines.  So much for Corbon making thier own ammo.  They DID tell me that they are trying to find another manufacturer to produce the 150 gr. loaded rounds.  Midway has already removed the .300 Whisper Corbon loaded Ammo from the website pages.

Can you help me out, as I haven't started to reload this round, yet?  Is their a source of formed brass, primed or unprimed?

Thanks, Joe

Try SSK for brass   http://www.sskindustries.com/index.htm  I got some from them last year don't know if they still have any.  SSK and Corbon are sister companies and they are both heavily committed to military contracts so I don't know what they have available right now.

I have shot a handful of deer with the 300 whisper, some with a subsonic load (240 matchking at 1050 fps) and some with a 125 BT at about 2000fps.  Chest shots with either round left a sparse blood trail as the others have experienced.  Most deer traveled 50-60 yards before piling up.  Head shots were much more effective.

The .300 Whisper is formed from .221 Fireball with no trimming necessary.  I have made them from .223, but it's far more labor intensive.  You might look to Reed's..he might be able to help you out.

Remington 125 gr PSP at 2000 fps.  Made mush of the lungs, just no external bleeding.
