New scope on my .308
« on: January 30, 2007, 06:09:06 PM »
A year ago I bought a new surviver .308 at a gun show mainly because of the price. It had a simmons 3x9x40 on it and for $150 new i.b. I could'nt pass it up. I took it to the range to break it in and had a few stuck cases but other than that good accuracy and a nice little gun.

I decided to carry it in the woods last year and took a nice buck with it. The next hunt was'nt so good. A complete miss on a doe @ 40 yds. I was a little upset with the rifle, so I took it to the bench and and put a 3 shot group barely on the broadside of the barn. Never could get it too shoot right again.

So I broke it out of the safe at the end of season this year and put a Swift scope on it and shot a .25 in group @ 50 yards with the side of a tree for a rest. I was sold, I was always a cheap scope buyer but am now not so sure of the accuracy of the "under 100's." So if anyone is looking for a good Leupold quality scope with all the same qualities, check out swift. The best $129.00 I've ever spent ( besides the $150 for the NEF) -Chad

Hello Chad, Welcome to wonderful world of Handi-holic's.
You got a bargin on the Handi even the tho scope didn't
hold up. I have 2 or 3 Simmons scope that are doing just
fine. Never had a Swift. I am kinda like go for cheaper scopes.

After a similiar experience years ago, I changed the way I "price" a new setup. For a long time now, I do not just look at the price of a new/used rifle. For example, if I go into the gunshop today and see a .280 Handi with a price tag of say $230, my thinking tells me I need to include the price of "happiness" too. By this, I mean quality rings, a quality scope, new dies, new powders, new brass, etc. Unless the price of that new/used rifle is just unbelieveably low causing me to buy it on the spot, I walk through the gunshop pricing out all the above mentioned needed items and then total them up. I would spend about $35 on dies, $40 on two new powders (if needed), at least $35 to $40 on new Win brass, around $35 on two bullet weights, $30 on rings, and at least $140 to $190 for a scope I would be satisfied with. I am now looking at an investment (I use this word a lot discussing firearms with my wife) of over $500 if it is a new caliber for me.

Do not misunderstand, I love this process but I know if I buy that Handi I will spend over $500 before I get it to the range. I completely understand if some of you say that's crazy .... $500 !!! But that is the way I price them out because I reload and I have to have good rings on a good scope to be happy with it. The great thing about Handi's is that initial price of $230. When I buy a bolt gun, we all know that price is going to be at least $500 just for the rifle. This is one reason why the last three purchases I made were in calibers I already had and two were Handi's.

My local gun shop has been selling swift scopes for a long time.
I don't have one yet, but have only heard good from them.
The 6x40 looks like the perfect match for my new 7mm-08 handi barrel.
No power adjustment ring means low mounts on open hammer guns.

Swift Premier or Premium scopes as they are called now are the good ones, the Standard line leave a lot to be desired and will disappoint most folks. I've been using Swift scopes for about 15yrs used to have a dealer here but no longer do, tween my son, my huntin partner and myself, we've got about 15 Premiers, great optics from an American owned company, made in Korea. The reason they can offer good optics at low price is, just as Mueller does, they don't spend money on advertising, pass the savings on to us buyers. ;)

I also agree on the Swift scope. A few years back on this site a guy named "quick" mentioned them in a post and I went and checked them out. I bought a Swift Premier 4-12x40 AO for $159.00 in March of 2005. I liked it then ... I like it today and it sits on my Bumble Bee .223 Handi. My friend/gunshop owner deals in them now and sells what he calls a "bunch" of them every year. He told a guy in the shop a while back that he has never had one complaint on the Swifts.

Well like I said before I used to be a died in the wool simmons or bushnell cheap scope buyer. And would still put one on a low recoil gun or plinker. What sold me was the clarity, side by side with any low or equal cost scope and it is night and day. Not to mention the ability to hold up to tough rides all over the country.

Both my hunting rifles have the swift premier 3x9x40 and have been sighted in once. I'm not bad mouthing other scopes, but when you take a fairly inexpensive gun such as the NEF and put a good quality scope on it, you end up with one fine clover leaf.

Makes me think, Why buy an expensive rifle when I can buy two NEF's?
