.44mag Ruger SRH vertical stringing
« on: May 05, 2003, 03:01:50 PM »
Hopeful for some ideas on a stringing problem with 9.5 inch barreled SRH.
when shooting at 25 yard target, the gun strings the bullet holes, one right above the other for all 6 shots.  -starts at zero, then stacks them one right above the other and usually touching.  i don't recall it ever doing this before. - shooting indoors on a rest.   usually shoot it getting ready for hunting season, and now don't know what to do next? has a 2x leupold that seems ok.

shooting factory 240 grain fed. classics. its not shot a lot. just checked before the season.

how would you suggest troubleshooting this:  change bullets, then scope? if problem remains, its the barrel?  Any ideas or process to resolve is appreciated.

the only thing I would say is first see if it is the gun or the scope. Take the
scope off and shoot it with the iron sights. At least you will know where to
look. I had this problem once with my freedom arms 454. I found out that
the scope was moving ever so slightly.

I would try some different ammo.I sometimes get these same results when working up loads.
I get these results when my pressures are above or below optimum specs.
I usually start 1 grain under maximum listed data because I consistantly use the same powder/lot from a 8 pound keg,and know the powder burn rate extensively.
I usually lower my charges 1 grain and my groups become normal again.

It's not your scope. A bad scope will put shots everywhere.

Best I can tell is you have shot this load before. Look to see if the load causing the stringing is of the same lot number.

Check your rest and grip. That 9.5 inch barrel has a long barrel time. Any deviation in grip will give you vertical stringing. You need a good solid rest as well, however a bad rest will do more than just give you vertical stringing- It will give you inconsistant groups.

Hope this helps.

Per the last post, your consistency of hold (grip strength on the gun, how high you hold the grip, etc.) is CRITICAL.   I also found in the .44 what seems to be true that some powders, such as Blue Dot in a gun I sold, would cause stringing...

Incidentally, I rest the bottom of the grip frame on the sandbag/rest, not the trigger guard or barrel.   The shooting of a long barrel off a bench, even with sandbags, can be punishing.    I do much better off a bench with the shorter barrel'd gun I now have.   Is this recoil/punishment possibly a factor for you?   Are you being honest about it?

Best Regards.

thanks for the info and suggestions.

the gun is back to normal.

the 2x leupold has had new adjustments added; and the old federal factory ammo has been changed to new federal factory ammo.

at the 25 yard indoor range, the revolver shoots better than i can.
