youth handie questions
« on: January 29, 2007, 09:02:51 AM »
Hello,

as I have posted on the rimfire side I am buying my daughter a 22 soon, however I want to go ahead and get her a centerfire with two barrels so they will be ready when she is.  what I want is a youth model with a 204 or 223 and a 7mm08 or 30/30 here are my questions are the youth super light good? or is the youth with the wood stock better?  is the 7mm08 in the youth barrel a shooter or should I go with a full size adult barrel?  also can you order the rifle from the dealer and have them fit the new barrel before they ship it?  and if I have to send it in how long of a turn around am I looking at?  btw she is 10 and is small I measure her lop at 11 3/4 to 12 inches so I think the factor stocks would fit her fine.

thanks

There is no 7mm-08 with a light barrel, just the standard contour 22", the youth just has a shorter stock. The barrel listed as a superlight 7mm-08 in the accessory barrel list is a typo.  You can't special order any other barrel combination,, what you see on the web site is what's available. 20" Superlights are only available in 22 hornet, 223, and .243, no 204, 7mm-08 or .30-30. You'd have to do some stock buying and swapping to get the unavailable calibers with a youth stock. Stock options are listed in the FAQs and Help sticky under 2005 Retail Parts Price list, their toll free number is there too.

As far as combo's go you do not have a lot of opions , none involve the 204 or 7-08 , what you will have to do is get a rifle and sent the frame to H&R to have another barrel fitted or buy a used barrel and fit it yourself . if you send to H&R it will take about 6 to 8 weeks to get back maybe longer depending on what barrels they have in stock at the time .

Some of the superlites do not shoot as well as we would like , but can be be made to shoot with a little work . i have one in 243 that is just starting to come around . if it were me , i would find a 223 and send the frame in for a 7-08 barrel , since she will have a 22LR this should cover the basics , for what its worth , the diffrence between the standard and lite is so little that i would go with the standard barrels in what ever one you chose .

Another option is to get one of the combos, the youths are available now in .243, 22Lr and 20ga or .410 at RR.

thats kinda what I was thinking would happen I will most likely buy her a 223 then send it in the next day to have it fitted for the 7mm08 or the 30/30.  I had not paid enough attention the website and thought the youth came in 204 also.  but 223 will be fine.  It just means I get to buy new dies and stuff.  she has shot my TCG2 with the 204 so the 223 should not be an issue.  thanks for your help.  and 6-8 weeks in not bad we can still have plenty of time on the range before next hunting season.

thanks
